What $6 diesel means for a truck fleet
A truck covering 100,000 miles a year at 6 mpg burns about 16,667 gallons. At this week's $6.352 that is about $105,867 a year, and every 10¢ on a gallon adds about $1,667. Since the first week of January, the diesel price has risen $2.88 a gallon, which is about $47,917 a year for that one truck.
You can't set the pump price, but you can set how fast your trucks run. The EPA's SmartWay program says a heavy truck at 65 mph can use up to 20% more fuel than at 55 mph, and an independent trial of 177 vans and 30 trucks measured a 5% fleet-wide saving after speed limiters were fitted: about $5,293 a year on this truck.
