This week in fleet fuel, 26 October 2026

Diesel down 0.11p on the week

The UK average diesel price was 199.22p a litre in the week of 26 October 2026: down 0.11p on the week before and up 1.64p on four weeks earlier. Petrol was 174.07p, down 0.50p on the week. This is the 5th highest weekly diesel price since the series began in June 2003.

For a fleet of 50 diesel vans covering 18,000 miles a year at 36 mpg, that is a fuel bill of £226,418 a year at this week's price, £64,600 more than at the price a year ago. A 60 mph limit on the 30% of their miles driven at 68 mph would save about £9,820 of it (DfT fuel curves).

How the numbers are worked out

Diesel and petrol

Weekly UK average pump price in pence per litre, times 4.54609 litres per gallon, divided by MPG. Defaults are 36 MPG diesel and 32 MPG petrol.

Electric

HMRC advisory electric rates for the quarter, blended by your base-charging share. This quarter: 7p a mile at home or base, 15p on public chargers.

Left out

Vehicle price, lease, servicing, tyres, insurance, tax and chargers. The Index covers energy per mile, the part that moves every week.

Guides

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to run a diesel van per mile?

In the week of 26 October 2026 a diesel van at 36 mpg cost 25.2p a mile in fuel, with diesel at 199.2p a litre (DESNZ). A year earlier it was 18.0p.

What is the AutoKontrol Fleet Cost Index?

A weekly figure for how many times more it costs in energy to drive a diesel van a mile than an electric van. This week it is 2.68: 25.2p against 9.4p. It uses government fuel prices and HMRC's electric rates, and updates every Tuesday after DESNZ publishes.

What is the cost per mile of petrol?

At 32 mpg, petrol cost 24.7p a mile in the week of 26 October 2026, with petrol at 174.1p a litre. Change the mpg in the calculator to see your own vehicles.

How much does an electric van cost per mile?

Using HMRC's advisory electric rates (7p a mile charged at home or base, 15p on public chargers) and 70% base charging, about 9.4p a mile. Your own tariff may be lower or higher.

How can a fleet cut its cost per mile?

Slow down on fast roads. On the Department for Transport's fuel curves a diesel van uses 14.5% less fuel per mile at 60 mph than at 68 mph. A speed limiter holds that on every journey. The calculator on this page shows what it is worth to your fleet.

Can I see the price in a past week?

Yes. The chart and the CSV go back to June 2003, every week since. Diesel's highest week in that time was 200.04p in the week of 12 October 2026.
