How much of the price of fuel is tax?
In the week of 26 October 2026, fuel duty was 52.95p a litre and VAT at 20% added 33.20p, so 43% of the 199.22p diesel price was tax. The remaining 113.07p covers the fuel itself, refining, distribution and the retailer. Duty is a fixed amount per litre, so when the pump price rises, only the VAT part of the tax rises with it.
