GeoKontrol 2 for Petrol Vehicles: GPS Zone-Based Speed Control
Petrol-powered commercial vehicles — vans, minibuses, utility vehicles, and light trucks — frequently operate in environments where a fixed maximum speed limit is only part of the story. These vehicles deliver to residential streets, transport passengers near schools, access hospital grounds, and move through depot yards, each with different appropriate speeds. A single fixed speed limiter cannot address this range of operating environments.
AutoKontrol’s GeoKontrol 2 provides the answer: automatic, GPS-based speed control that adjusts the vehicle’s maximum speed depending on its location. When a petrol van enters a 20mph residential zone, GeoKontrol 2 enforces 20mph. When it pulls into a customer depot, the limit drops to the depot’s own speed restriction. When it reaches the dual carriageway, full performance is available. No driver action is required — the system operates entirely automatically.
GeoKontrol 2 is a standalone IoT device with its own GPS receiver and cellular connectivity. It does not require a telematics platform, a fleet management system, or any external subscription to function. With over 41 years of speed limiter engineering and products in more than 50 countries, AutoKontrol has designed GeoKontrol 2 to bring intelligent speed governance to every type of commercial fleet — including petrol-powered vehicles.
How GeoKontrol 2 Interfaces with Petrol Vehicles
GeoKontrol 2 connects to the petrol vehicle’s accelerator pedal signal. On vehicles with drive-by-wire electronic throttle systems, this is the analogue voltage signal (or SENT protocol signal on newer vehicles) that controls the electronic throttle body. The device also connects to the CAN bus for vehicle speed data and uses its integrated GNSS receiver for continuous position monitoring.
When the vehicle is outside any speed-restricted zone — or in a zone where its current speed is below the zone limit — GeoKontrol 2 passes the pedal signal through unmodified. The electronic throttle body responds normally to driver input, and the vehicle behaves as standard.
When the vehicle enters a zone with a lower speed limit, GeoKontrol 2 caps the pedal signal at the level needed to maintain the zone speed. On a petrol engine, this means the electronic throttle body cannot open beyond the position that delivers the zone’s maximum speed. With less air entering the engine, the fuel injection system reduces fuel delivery to maintain the correct air-fuel ratio, and power output is limited. The vehicle holds smoothly at the zone speed.
For older petrol vehicles with cable-throttle systems, GeoKontrol 2 can interface with the mechanical throttle through a compatible actuator, similar to the approach used by our System 80 mechanical speed limiter.
Technical Considerations for GeoKontrol 2 and Petrol Engines
Throttle Body Response
Petrol engine electronic throttle bodies use a butterfly valve to control airflow. The relationship between valve position and airflow is non-linear, and the throttle response characteristics vary between engine types. GeoKontrol 2’s control algorithm is calibrated for the throttle characteristics of each vehicle platform, ensuring smooth and accurate zone speed enforcement without hunting or oscillation.
Catalytic Converter Protection
GeoKontrol 2 manages speed purely through throttle demand control — it never cuts ignition or fuel supply. This is important for petrol vehicles because ignition or fuel interruption can allow unburned fuel to reach the catalytic converter, causing damage from overheating. GeoKontrol 2’s throttle-based approach maintains normal combustion throughout, protecting the catalyst and preserving emissions system function.
Naturally Aspirated and Turbocharged Compatibility
GeoKontrol 2 works with both naturally aspirated and turbocharged petrol engines. On turbocharged petrol vehicles, the ECU manages boost pressure in response to the throttle demand signal — when GeoKontrol 2 reduces the demand, the ECU reduces boost accordingly. The turbocharger, wastegate, and intercooler systems operate within their normal parameters.
Zone Transition Smoothness
Petrol engines respond quickly to throttle changes — particularly naturally aspirated engines, where there is a direct relationship between throttle position and airflow. This means zone transitions on petrol vehicles can be very smooth, with the vehicle adjusting to the new zone speed within a few seconds of entering the zone boundary. The driver feels the throttle authority reduce or increase progressively, with no abrupt changes.
GPS Accuracy and Zone Boundaries
GeoKontrol 2 uses advanced GNSS positioning with zone boundary algorithms that account for GPS accuracy tolerances. In open areas, GPS accuracy of 2-3 metres ensures zone transitions happen at the correct point. In urban canyons or areas with reduced satellite visibility, the device uses dead reckoning based on CAN bus speed data to maintain zone awareness until clear GPS signal returns.
Real-World Applications
Petrol Van Delivery Operations
Petrol vans used for delivery — parcels, groceries, pharmacy supplies, catering — frequently operate in residential areas where 20mph limits apply. GeoKontrol 2 enforces these limits automatically, ensuring consistent compliance regardless of time pressure, driver familiarity with the area, or distraction. Operators can also define custom zones around specific delivery locations such as schools, hospitals, and care homes.
Minibus and Passenger Transport
Petrol minibuses used for school transport, community services, airport transfers, and staff shuttles carry vulnerable passengers. GeoKontrol 2 provides automatic speed governance in school zones, hospital grounds, and residential areas — exactly the environments where these vehicles operate most. Parents, school administrators, and clients gain confidence from knowing that the vehicle is automatically speed-limited in sensitive areas.
Estate and Campus Vehicles
Petrol utility vehicles operating on large estates, university campuses, and business parks need low-speed governance within the site and normal road performance outside it. GeoKontrol 2’s custom geofencing handles this perfectly — the site boundary defines a low-speed zone, and the public road outside allows the vehicle’s full performance.
Hire and Rental Fleet Vehicles
Operators hiring out petrol vans and utility vehicles can deploy GeoKontrol 2 to enforce speed governance across their rental fleet. Site-specific speed limits at customer locations, depot speed restrictions, and general urban speed compliance can all be managed centrally without relying on the hire driver’s compliance.
Retail and Service Fleets
Petrol vehicles used by retail chains, service companies, and mobile trades for attending customer sites across multiple locations benefit from GeoKontrol 2’s ability to define custom speed zones for every site in the network. Each location’s specific speed requirements are enforced automatically when the vehicle arrives.
No Telematics Required
GeoKontrol 2 is a self-contained IoT device. It carries its own GPS receiver, processor, zone database, and cellular modem. No fleet management platform, telematics unit, or third-party subscription is needed. Fleet managers access the GeoKontrol web portal to define and manage zones, and updates are pushed to devices over the cellular network.
This standalone capability makes GeoKontrol 2 particularly accessible for smaller petrol fleets that may not have telematics infrastructure but still need intelligent speed governance.
