What Is SENT Protocol and Why Does It Matter for Diesel Fleets?

SENT is a digital communication protocol used between the accelerator pedal position sensor and the Engine Control Unit (ECU). Unlike the older analogue voltage signals used in earlier drive-by-wire systems, SENT transmits pedal position data as a series of precisely timed digital pulses.

The advantages of SENT over analogue signals include higher resolution (finer gradations of pedal position), built-in error detection, and greater resistance to electrical noise. Vehicle manufacturers adopted SENT because it improves throttle response accuracy and reduces the risk of signal interference in the increasingly complex electrical environments of modern commercial vehicles.

For speed limiters, SENT protocol presents both a challenge and an opportunity. The challenge is that a conventional DBW speed limiter designed to intercept and modify analogue voltage signals cannot work with a SENT digital signal. The opportunity is that SENT’s higher resolution enables even more precise speed control than was possible with analogue systems.

How the SENT Speed Limiter Interfaces with Diesel Engines

Diesel engines operate fundamentally differently from petrol engines. Rather than controlling an air throttle, the ECU in a diesel vehicle controls the volume and timing of fuel injection. The accelerator pedal signal tells the ECU how much power the driver is requesting, and the ECU translates that into injector pulse width, injection timing, turbocharger boost pressure, and exhaust gas recirculation settings.

Because diesel engines rely on fuel injection quantity rather than throttle butterfly position, the speed limiting effect is achieved by reducing the fuel demand signal. The ECU responds by reducing injector pulse width and adjusting turbo boost pressure accordingly. The result is a smooth, progressive reduction in engine output that feels natural to the driver.

The closed-loop control algorithm continuously monitors vehicle speed and adjusts the modified signal in real time. This is particularly important for diesel vehicles, which produce high torque at low engine speeds and can maintain or gain speed more easily than petrol equivalents when loaded.

Technical Considerations for SENT and Diesel

Turbocharger Management

Modern diesel engines use variable-geometry turbochargers (VGT) or twin-turbo systems managed by the ECU. When the SENT Speed Limiter reduces the fuel demand signal, the ECU automatically adjusts turbo boost pressure to match. This integrated response means there is no risk of overboosting or turbo surge during speed limiting — the ECU manages the entire powertrain response as a coordinated system.

Exhaust Aftertreatment Compatibility

Diesel vehicles are fitted with complex exhaust aftertreatment systems including Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF), Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), and Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR). These systems depend on accurate ECU control of engine operating parameters. Because the SENT Speed Limiter works through the ECU’s existing control logic — modifying the demand signal rather than overriding engine outputs directly — all aftertreatment functions continue to operate normally. DPF regeneration cycles, AdBlue injection, and EGR valve operation are unaffected.

CAN Bus Integration

On diesel commercial vehicles, CAN bus speed data is typically derived from wheel speed sensors via the ABS module or from the transmission output speed sensor. This data is already corrected for tyre size and calibrated by the vehicle manufacturer, ensuring the speed limiter operates with high accuracy — typically within +/- 1 km/h of the set speed.
