Electric vehicles are at the forefront of digital vehicle architecture. Because EVs are designed from the ground up with electronic control systems — there is no mechanical throttle to evolve from — manufacturers have adopted the most advanced communication protocols available. SENT protocol, with its high-resolution digital signal transmission, is increasingly the standard for accelerator pedal position sensing in new electric commercial vehicles.

The accelerator pedal in an electric vehicle serves the same functional purpose as in a combustion vehicle: it communicates the driver’s power demand. In an EV, that SENT signal is sent to the Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) or motor controller, which translates it into a torque demand for the electric motor or motors.

This architecture is well suited to speed limiter integration. The SENT Speed Limiter intercepts the digital pedal signal and modifies it when the vehicle approaches the set speed, reducing the torque demand communicated to the motor controller.

Electric motors deliver torque very differently from internal combustion engines. An electric motor produces maximum torque from zero RPM, with a flat torque curve that provides strong, immediate acceleration. This characteristic makes precise speed limiter control particularly important — without intervention, an electric commercial vehicle can reach its set speed quickly and with considerable momentum.

Because electric motors respond almost instantaneously to changes in demand — there is no turbo lag, no gearbox shift delay, no combustion cycle latency — the speed limiter’s control loop operates at correspondingly high speed. The result is exceptionally smooth speed limiting, with the vehicle holding precisely at the set speed.

Technical Considerations for SENT and Electric Vehicles

Regenerative Braking Interaction

One of the most significant differences between electric and combustion vehicles is regenerative braking. When the driver lifts off the accelerator in an EV, the motor controller typically applies regenerative braking — using the electric motor as a generator to slow the vehicle and recover energy to the battery.

The SENT Speed Limiter is designed to work harmoniously with regenerative braking. When the speed limiter reduces the torque demand signal, the motor controller may apply regenerative braking as part of its normal response to reduced demand. This actually assists the speed limiting process, providing a gentle deceleration force that helps maintain the set speed. Battery Management System Compatibility

Electric vehicles have sophisticated Battery Management Systems (BMS) that monitor cell voltages, temperatures, and state of charge to protect the battery pack. By working exclusively through the accelerator pedal signal, the speed limiter operates within the vehicle’s existing control hierarchy. The motor controller and BMS continue to manage battery health, thermal limits, and charge/discharge rates independently.

Most electric commercial vehicles use a single-speed reduction gear between the motor and the drive wheels. Some newer designs use two-speed transmissions to optimise efficiency across a wider speed range.
