SENT Speed Limiters for Hybrid Vehicles: Dual-Powertrain Speed Control

Hybrid commercial vehicles present a unique engineering challenge for speed limiter technology. These vehicles switch between electric motor drive, internal combustion engine drive, and combined modes depending on speed, load, battery state, and driver demand. A speed limiter for a hybrid vehicle must deliver consistent, accurate speed control regardless of which powertrain mode is active — and the transitions between modes must remain smooth.

AutoKontrol’s SENT Speed Limiter is engineered to meet this challenge. By operating at the accelerator pedal signal level using SENT (Single Edge Nibble Transmission) protocol, our speed limiter controls the driver’s power demand before the vehicle’s own systems decide how to distribute that demand between the electric motor and the combustion engine.

With over 41 years of speed limiter engineering and products in service across more than 50 countries, we have developed our SENT solution to handle the complexity of hybrid powertrain architectures.

How Hybrid Powertrains Use SENT Protocol

In a hybrid commercial vehicle, the accelerator pedal serves as the single input for driver power demand — regardless of whether that power ultimately comes from the electric motor, the combustion engine, or both. Modern hybrid vehicles increasingly use SENT protocol for the accelerator pedal position sensor, transmitting a high-resolution digital signal to the Hybrid Control Unit (HCU) or Vehicle Control Unit (VCU).

The HCU receives the pedal demand signal and makes real-time decisions about powertrain mode. At low speeds and light loads, it may drive the electric motor alone. Under heavy acceleration or at higher speeds, it may engage the combustion engine. During steady-state cruising, it may use the combustion engine to drive the wheels while simultaneously charging the battery via the electric motor acting as a generator.

The critical insight for speed limiter design is that the accelerator pedal signal sits upstream of all these powertrain decisions. By intercepting and modifying the SENT signal at the pedal level, the speed limiter controls the total power demand before the HCU allocates it across powertrains.

How the SENT Speed Limiter Controls Hybrid Vehicles

The AutoKontrol SENT Speed Limiter is installed between the accelerator pedal sensor and the HCU/VCU. It monitors vehicle speed via the CAN bus and reads the SENT pedal position signal continuously.

When the vehicle is below the set speed, the pedal signal passes through unmodified. The HCU manages powertrain mode selection exactly as it would without a speed limiter. The driver experiences normal vehicle behaviour — electric-only at low speed, engine engagement at higher loads, seamless transitions between modes.

As the vehicle approaches the set speed, the SENT Speed Limiter progressively reduces the demand signal sent to the HCU. Because the HCU receives a lower power demand, it reduces output from whichever powertrain mode is currently active. If the vehicle is in electric-only mode, motor torque is reduced. If the combustion engine is running, fuel injection and throttle demand are reduced. If both powertrains are active, the HCU reduces combined output according to its own efficiency algorithms.

The speed limiter does not need to know which powertrain mode is active. It controls the demand signal, and the vehicle’s own hybrid control logic handles the rest. This approach is fundamental to reliable hybrid speed limiting — it works with the vehicle’s systems rather than attempting to override them.

Technical Considerations for SENT and Hybrid Vehicles

Mode Transition During Speed Limiting

One concern specific to hybrid vehicles is what happens when the powertrain transitions between modes while the speed limiter is active. For example, if a hybrid truck is cruising at the set speed in electric-only mode and the HCU decides to start the combustion engine to charge the battery, there is a brief period where the available power changes.

The SENT Speed Limiter’s closed-loop control algorithm handles these transitions by continuously monitoring vehicle speed and adjusting the demand signal accordingly. If a mode transition causes a momentary change in vehicle speed, the algorithm corrects within fractions of a second. The driver and passengers experience smooth, consistent speed maintenance regardless of background powertrain activity.

Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) Considerations

Plug-in hybrid commercial vehicles can operate for extended periods in pure electric mode when the battery is sufficiently charged, then transition to hybrid or engine-only mode as the battery depletes. The SENT Speed Limiter operates identically in all modes. There is no configuration change required when the vehicle transitions from electric to hybrid operation — the speed limiter continues to control the pedal demand signal, and the HCU manages powertrain selection independently.

Regenerative Braking in Hybrid Mode

Hybrid vehicles use regenerative braking to recover energy during deceleration. When the SENT Speed Limiter reduces the pedal demand signal, the HCU may apply regenerative braking through the electric motor as part of its response to reduced demand. This assists the speed limiting process by providing a gentle deceleration force, resulting in smoother speed control than would be achieved with engine braking alone.

Diesel-Electric and Petrol-Electric Variants

Hybrid commercial vehicles may use either diesel or petrol combustion engines paired with electric motors. The SENT Speed Limiter is agnostic to the combustion engine type — it operates on the pedal demand signal regardless of the fuel used by the ICE component. Whether the vehicle is a diesel-electric hybrid truck or a petrol-electric hybrid van, the same SENT Speed Limiter installation applies.

CAN Bus Complexity

Hybrid vehicles typically have more complex CAN bus architectures than single-powertrain vehicles, with additional modules for battery management, motor control, and hybrid supervisory control. The SENT Speed Limiter reads speed data from the CAN bus and is configured to the specific CAN protocol of each vehicle platform. AutoKontrol’s engineering team maintains calibration data for a wide range of hybrid commercial vehicles to ensure clean CAN bus integration.

Real-World Applications

Urban Distribution with Hybrid Vans

Hybrid vans from manufacturers including Ford, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen are widely used for urban delivery. These vehicles frequently transition between electric and engine modes during stop-start urban driving. The SENT Speed Limiter ensures consistent speed compliance in 20mph and 30mph zones regardless of powertrain mode.

Hybrid Bus Operations

Several UK bus operators have adopted hybrid buses as a stepping stone to full electrification. Speed limiters on these vehicles must operate reliably through thousands of daily mode transitions. The SENT Speed Limiter’s pedal-level control approach ensures consistent performance across the demanding duty cycle of urban bus operations.

Mixed Fleet Operations

Many fleet operators are transitioning gradually, running a mix of diesel, hybrid, and electric vehicles. AutoKontrol provides a consistent speed limiter solution across the fleet — the SENT Speed Limiter for SENT-equipped hybrids, alongside our DBW Speed Limiter for older analogue-throttle vehicles.

Compliance and Regulation

Speed limiter requirements under ECE Regulation R89 and EU General Safety Regulation 2019/2144 apply to hybrid commercial vehicles in the same categories as diesel and electric equivalents. DVSA enforcement makes no distinction based on powertrain type. The AutoKontrol SENT Speed Limiter meets all regulatory requirements for hybrid vehicle installations.
