GeoKontrol 2: IoT GPS Geofenced Speed Control for Fleets
Traditional speed limiters set a single maximum speed for the vehicle. That single speed might be 56mph for an HGV or 62mph for a bus. It works well for open-road compliance, but it does nothing to manage vehicle speed in the places where the most serious fleet-related injuries actually happen — depots, distribution centres, school zones, construction sites, customer premises, and residential neighbourhoods.
GeoKontrol 2 is AutoKontrol’s answer to this problem. It is a standalone IoT device that uses GPS positioning to automatically adjust a vehicle’s maximum speed based on its geographic location. When a vehicle enters a defined zone — a depot, a school zone, a customer site — the speed limit changes automatically, without any action from the driver. When the vehicle leaves the zone, the limit reverts.
What makes GeoKontrol 2 different from any other product on the market is that it is a standalone IoT device. It does not require a telematics system, a fleet management platform subscription, or any existing tracking hardware. It works independently, straight out of the box, on any vehicle.
How GeoKontrol 2 Works
GPS Position Determination
GeoKontrol 2 incorporates a high-sensitivity GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) receiver that tracks the vehicle’s position using GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo satellite constellations simultaneously. Multi-constellation reception ensures reliable positioning even in partially obstructed environments such as urban canyons, industrial estates, and tree-lined roads.
The device determines its position continuously and compares it against its stored zone database to identify whether the vehicle is within any defined speed zone.
Zone Definition
Fleet managers define speed zones in two ways:
Custom zones via web portal — Log into the GeoKontrol 2 management portal, draw a zone on the map (circle, rectangle, or custom polygon), assign a speed limit, and save. The zone is wirelessly transmitted to all GeoKontrol 2 devices in the fleet. Zones can be created, modified, or deleted at any time without physical access to the vehicle.
Automatic zone detection — GeoKontrol 2 can also detect and apply speed zones automatically based on known speed limit data. This includes 20mph zones, school zones, and other areas where local speed limits are lower than the national limit. Automatic zone detection works alongside custom zones — fleet managers can rely on automatic detection for standard areas and add custom zones for their specific operational locations.
This dual approach means fleet managers get comprehensive zone coverage without having to manually define every 20mph zone or school zone in the country. Custom zones handle the fleet-specific locations — depots, customer sites, construction sites — while automatic detection handles the broader road network.
Speed Control
When GeoKontrol 2 determines that the vehicle has entered a speed zone, it communicates with the vehicle’s engine management system to reduce the maximum available speed to the zone’s configured limit. The method of speed control depends on the vehicle’s throttle type:
- Drive-By-Wire vehicles: GeoKontrol 2 interfaces with the electronic throttle signal to progressively limit throttle demand
- CAN bus vehicles: On supported platforms, GeoKontrol 2 can send speed limit commands directly via the vehicle’s CAN bus network
The speed reduction is smooth and progressive. The driver feels the accelerator become less responsive as the zone speed limit is approached — there is no sudden cut-off or uncomfortable deceleration. The experience is natural and predictable.
When the vehicle exits the zone, the speed limit gradually returns to the default maximum. The transition is equally smooth in both directions.
Driver Notification
A dashboard-mounted display shows the driver the current speed zone limit. When the vehicle enters or exits a zone, the display updates to show the new limit. This transparency is important for driver acceptance — the driver always knows what speed limit applies and can see that the system is working correctly.
An optional audible alert can be configured to sound briefly when a zone boundary is crossed, providing additional awareness for the driver.
Standalone IoT Architecture
The defining characteristic of GeoKontrol 2 is its standalone nature. Many GPS-based speed control systems are features within larger telematics platforms — they require a specific tracking system to be installed, a subscription to a particular fleet management platform, and integration work to connect the speed control to the existing hardware.
GeoKontrol 2 requires none of this.
It is a self-contained IoT device with its own GPS receiver, its own cellular connectivity for zone updates, its own processing capability, and its own vehicle interface. It installs as a single unit and operates independently. If you already have a telematics system, GeoKontrol 2 works alongside it without conflict. If you do not have a telematics system, GeoKontrol 2 works on its own.
This standalone approach has several important advantages:
No vendor lock-in — GeoKontrol 2 does not tie you to any specific telematics provider. You can change your tracking system, upgrade it, or remove it entirely without affecting your zone-based speed control.
Simpler procurement — GeoKontrol 2 can be procured and installed independently of your telematics contract. You do not need to coordinate between suppliers or wait for system integration work.
Lower complexity — One device, one purpose, one interface. There are no integration dependencies, no API connections to maintain, and no risk of one system update breaking another.
Universal compatibility — GeoKontrol 2 works on any vehicle, regardless of what other technology is installed. It does not care whether you use Webfleet, Microlyst, Masternaut, or no telematics at all.
For fleet operators who want combined speed limiting and GPS tracking with GeoKontrol zone control in a single integrated platform, our TrackSpeed product provides exactly that — AutoKontrol speed limiter plus ScorpionTrack Fleet GPS tracking in one device. GeoKontrol 2 is for operators who want the zone-based speed control capability without changing their existing telematics setup.
Practical Applications
Depot and Distribution Centre Safety
HSE statistics show that approximately 50 people are killed each year in workplace transport incidents in the UK. A significant proportion of these occur in depots and distribution centres where vehicles and pedestrians share space.
GeoKontrol 2 allows fleet managers to enforce strict speed limits within depot boundaries — typically 5 to 10mph — automatically, on every vehicle, every time. There is no reliance on driver memory, signage, or management instruction. The speed control is physical and automatic.
A typical depot configuration:
| Zone | Speed Limit | Coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Site entrance | 10 mph | Gatehouse and security area |
| Yard circulation | 10 mph | Main yard area |
| Loading bay approach | 5 mph | Areas with pedestrian activity |
| Fuel island | 5 mph | Refuelling area |
| Parking area | 5 mph | Staff parking and walkways |
School Zones
GeoKontrol 2’s automatic zone detection identifies school zones and applies appropriate speed limits during school hours. For bus operators, local authority fleets, and delivery operators whose routes pass near schools, this provides an additional layer of safety without any configuration effort.
Custom zones can be added for specific schools or areas where the automatic detection needs supplementing — for example, private school access roads or nursery locations.
20mph Zones
The expansion of 20mph zones across UK towns and cities creates a compliance challenge for fleet operators. Drivers must remember which roads are 20mph and which are 30mph, and the limits can change from one street to the next. GeoKontrol 2 handles this automatically — when the vehicle enters a 20mph zone, the speed limit adjusts. When it leaves, the limit reverts.
Construction Sites
Construction sites have strict vehicle speed requirements — typically 5 to 15mph depending on the area. GeoKontrol 2 zones can be created and modified through the web portal as site layouts change during the project. There is no physical infrastructure to install or relocate — the speed management is entirely GPS-based and can be updated in minutes.
Customer Premises
Many customers — in manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, food processing, utilities, and petrochemicals — mandate specific vehicle speed limits on their sites. GeoKontrol 2 allows fleet operators to programme these customer-specific limits once. They then apply automatically on every visit, providing documented compliance for contract and audit purposes.

Benefits for Fleet Operators
Workplace safety compliance: Directly addresses HSE requirements for managing vehicle speed in workplaces. Provides documented evidence of active speed management for inspections and audits.
Automatic 20mph zone compliance: Removes the reliance on driver awareness for 20mph zones. The system knows the zones and enforces them automatically.
Reduced site damage: Lower vehicle speeds in depots and customer premises significantly reduce the frequency and cost of damage to vehicles, buildings, loading equipment, and stock.
Insurance evidence: Comprehensive logging of zone entry, exit, and speed compliance provides evidence for insurance assessments and claims defence.
Community relations: Automatic speed reduction in residential areas reduces noise, risk, and the community complaints that can threaten operating hours and delivery curfews.
Driver acceptance: Drivers typically welcome GeoKontrol 2 because it removes ambiguity. Instead of trying to remember different speed limits for different sites, the system handles it. Drivers can focus on driving safely rather than memorising site rules.
No telematics dependency: Works alongside any existing telematics system or independently with no telematics at all. No vendor lock-in, no integration complexity.
Fitting and Installation
GeoKontrol 2 is installed by connecting the unit to the vehicle’s throttle system (Drive-By-Wire signal or CAN bus), power supply, and GPS/cellular antennas. A dashboard display is fitted for driver speed zone indication.
Through SGH Connect, our professional fitting network, GeoKontrol 2 installation is available anywhere in the UK within 5 working days. SGH Connect engineers are trained by AutoKontrol to install, configure, and commission GeoKontrol 2, including initial zone setup and driver display placement.
Typical installation time is 2 to 3 hours per vehicle. Zone configuration — both custom zones and automatic detection settings — can be completed during the installation visit or configured remotely through the web portal at any time afterward.
