What Does Fuel Efficient Driving Achieve? Costs, CO2 and Wear
Fuel efficient driving achieves four things: lower fuel use and cost, lower CO2 emissions, less wear on the vehicle, and smoother, safer driving. For a fleet the first is the big one. Diesel was 199.22p a litre in the week of 26 October 2026, so every litre not burned is worth nearly £2.
What does fuel efficient driving achieve?
It reduces fuel consumption, which cuts running costs, and it cuts the carbon dioxide that comes out of the exhaust. It also reduces wear on brakes, tyres and the engine, and it makes for calmer driving that is easier to do safely. If you are revising for the UK driving theory test, those are the answers the question is looking for.
Each benefit comes from the same behaviour: moving the vehicle along at a steady pace, without hard acceleration, late braking or high speed.
How much money does fuel efficient driving save?
It saves the price of every litre you do not burn. Pence per mile is the pence-per-litre price multiplied by 4.54609 and divided by miles per gallon. At the week of 26 October 2026 DESNZ diesel price of 199.22p, a diesel van doing 36 mpg costs 25.2p a mile to run on fuel alone.
Here is what that means for a fleet of 20 diesel vans, each doing 25,000 miles a year:
| Item | Figure |
|---|---|
| Fuel per van per year | 25,000 miles / 36 mpg x 4.54609 = 3,157 litres |
| Fuel cost per van per year | 3,157 litres x £1.9922 = £6,289 |
| Fuel cost for 20 vans | £125,788 |
| Each 1% saved | 31.6 litres, or £63 a van |
| Each 1% saved across 20 vans | £1,258 a year |
Every percentage point is worth £1,258 a year to that fleet. Small improvements pay for themselves quickly because fuel is bought every week.
How much CO2 does fuel efficient driving cut?
Burning less diesel produces less CO2 in direct proportion. The government’s GHG conversion factors for 2026 put diesel (average biofuel blend) at 2.58354 kg CO2e a litre. Each litre saved avoids about 2.6 kg.
In the 20 van example, saving 1% of fuel avoids about 82 kg of CO2e a van a year, or 1.6 tonnes across the fleet. That is a number you can put straight into sustainability reporting, because it comes from litres, which your fuel records already hold.
Does fuel efficient driving reduce wear and tear?
Yes. Gentle acceleration and early, progressive braking put less load on brake pads, discs, tyres and the transmission. Anticipating the road and keeping a steady speed means fewer hard stops. We do not have a published percentage for maintenance savings, so measure it yourself: compare brake pad and tyre replacement intervals before and after a change.
Does fuel efficient driving make drivers safer?
It makes driving calmer, and calm driving gives drivers more time to react. Keeping a gap, easing off early and holding a steady speed are the same habits that save fuel. A vehicle that is not being pushed to its top speed also has a longer stopping margin when something goes wrong ahead.
Which part of fuel efficient driving is worth the most?
Speed, on fast roads. The Department for Transport’s fuel consumption curves, in the TAG data book (v2.03, May 2026), show a diesel van uses 14.5% less fuel per mile at 60 mph than at 68 mph. A petrol van uses 16.1% less at 60 mph than 70 mph, and a diesel car 9.6% less.
Take the 20 van fleet and suppose 35% of its miles are driven at 68 mph. Moving those miles to 60 saves 3,157 x 0.35 x 0.145 = 160 litres a van, or about £319. Across 20 vans that is £6,384 a year and about 414 kg of CO2e a van. The 35% share is an assumption for the example. Your own share decides your own figure, and the 70 vs 60 mph worked example shows how it moves.
What do real fleets achieve?
Results vary widely with the vehicles and the work. Two published trials give a range. A CE Delft study for Novem (March 2009) covered 16 companies, 177 vans and 30 trucks of 3.5 to 12 tonnes over a year, and found a 5% average fuel saving from speed limiters.
In a trial reported by Transport Engineer on 25 October 2012, a utilities firm fitted AutoKontrol’s Rev.Control to 19 vehicles, panel vans, 3.5 tonne vans and tippers, and 4x4 pick-ups, most of them towing. Over six months fuel economy improved by 4.42 mpg, or 24.72%. The firm then ordered more than 300 units. That was a different product doing a different job from a pure speed cap, and one utility fleet is not a promise for yours.
Why is fuel efficient driving hard to keep up?
Because it relies on each driver, every journey. Drivers are told how to save fuel, they do it for a few weeks, and then deadlines, tiredness and habit take over. Anything that depends on memory fades. For the policy view, see fuel efficient driving for fleets. For the techniques themselves, see which driving technique can save fuel.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does fuel efficient driving achieve in the driving theory test?
The expected answer is that it reduces fuel consumption and cost, reduces emissions, and reduces wear on the vehicle. It also encourages smoother, safer driving. All four go together because they come from the same steady style of driving.
How much fuel can fuel efficient driving save?
There is no single figure that applies to every driver or vehicle. Speed is the one lever with published numbers: the Department for Transport’s curves give a diesel van 14.5% less fuel per mile at 60 mph than 68 mph. The saving you see depends on how many of your miles are driven that fast.
Is fuel efficient driving worth it for a small fleet?
Yes, because the saving scales with fuel spend. At 199.22p a litre, each 1% saved on a van doing 25,000 miles a year at 36 mpg is worth about £63. Ten vans save £630 a year for every percentage point.
Does fuel efficient driving reduce CO2?
Yes, in direct proportion to the fuel saved. Diesel produces 2.58354 kg CO2e a litre according to the 2026 government conversion factors. Saving 100 litres avoids about 258 kg.
What is the easiest way to make fuel efficient driving stick?
Fix the settings that do not rely on memory. A speed limiter holds the top speed on every journey, whether or not the driver is thinking about fuel. Habits like gentle braking still need coaching and feedback.
Cut your fleet’s fuel bill
Work out your own figure with the speed and fuel calculator. It takes your vehicle type, mileage and the share of miles driven at speed, and shows the litres, pounds and CO2 at a lower cap.
A speed cap holds the setting for you. The Department for Transport’s fuel consumption curves show a diesel van using 14.5% less fuel per mile at 60 mph than at 68 mph, so the more of your miles are driven above the cap, the more a limiter saves.
