In a Drive-By-Wire throttle system, the accelerator pedal is not physically connected to the engine. Instead, the pedal contains an electronic position sensor that generates a voltage signal — typically between 0.5V and 4.5V — proportional to how far the driver has pressed the pedal. This signal is sent to the Engine Control Unit (ECU), which interprets it and controls the electronic throttle body or fuelling system accordingly.

Below the Set Speed
When the vehicle is travelling below the configured maximum speed, the DBW Speed Limiter passes the accelerator pedal signal through to the ECU without any modification. The driver has full, unrestricted control of the throttle. The vehicle behaves identically to one without a speed limiter fitted. There is no perceptible difference in throttle response, acceleration, or driveability.
Approaching the Set Speed
As the vehicle speed approaches the configured maximum — typically within 2 to 3 km/h — the DBW Speed Limiter begins to intervene. It progressively reduces the voltage signal passed to the ECU, effectively telling the engine management system that the driver is requesting less throttle than they are actually applying.
This reduction is smooth and gradual. The driver feels the accelerator become progressively less responsive — the pedal can still be pressed further, but additional pedal travel does not result in additional speed. There is no sudden cut-off, no jerk, and no uncomfortable deceleration. The speed limiting feels natural, similar to reaching the top of a gentle incline.
At the Set Speed
Once the vehicle reaches the set speed, the DBW Speed Limiter actively maintains it within +/- 1 km/h using a closed-loop control algorithm.
