What Is the SENT Protocol?

SENT stands for Single Edge Nibble Transmission. It is a point-to-point digital communication protocol defined by SAE International under standard J2716. Unlike the analogue voltage signals used in traditional Drive-By-Wire (DBW) throttle systems, SENT transmits throttle position data as a series of digital pulses.

In a conventional DBW system, the accelerator pedal sensor generates an analogue voltage — typically between 0.5V and 4.5V — proportional to the pedal position. The Engine Control Unit (ECU) reads this voltage to determine how much throttle the driver is requesting.

In a SENT-based system, the accelerator pedal sensor transmits a digital signal consisting of precisely timed pulse sequences. Each pulse sequence (or “nibble”) encodes throttle position data with significantly higher resolution and accuracy than an analogue voltage signal. The protocol also includes built-in error detection, allowing the ECU to verify the integrity of every data transmission.

How the SENT Speed Limiter Works

Signal Processing

The SENT Speed Limiter receives the digital pulse train from the accelerator pedal sensor, decodes the throttle position data from each SENT frame, and processes it in real time. Simultaneously, the unit monitors the vehicle’s speed via the CAN bus network.

When the vehicle is travelling below the configured maximum speed, the SENT Speed Limiter passes the pedal sensor’s SENT signal through to the ECU without modification. The driver has full, unrestricted throttle control.

As the vehicle approaches the set speed, the SENT Speed Limiter begins to modify the SENT data frames. It recalculates the throttle position value within each frame, reducing the reported pedal position to progressively limit engine power. Critically, the unit also recalculates the CRC checksum for each modified frame, ensuring the ECU accepts the modified signal as valid. If the CRC were incorrect, the ECU would reject the data and trigger a fault code — the SENT Speed Limiter prevents this by maintaining protocol-correct communication at all times.

Precision Control

The SENT Speed Limiter maintains the configured maximum speed to within +/- 1 km/h. The higher resolution of the SENT protocol actually enables finer throttle control than analogue systems, because the speed limiter can make smaller, more precise adjustments to the throttle demand signal.

A closed-loop control algorithm continuously adjusts the throttle signal based on the difference between actual vehicle speed and the set speed.
