How the System 80 Works

The System 80 operates on a fundamentally straightforward principle: it physically limits how far the throttle cable can travel, preventing the engine from receiving enough fuel to exceed the set speed.

The Actuator Mechanism

The System 80 uses a precision electro-mechanical actuator that is fitted in-line with the vehicle’s throttle cable. Under normal driving conditions — when the vehicle is below the set speed — the actuator allows the cable to move freely. The driver has full, unrestricted throttle control, and the vehicle behaves exactly as it would without the speed limiter fitted.

When the vehicle reaches the configured maximum speed, the actuator engages and restricts further cable travel. The throttle cable is physically prevented from opening the engine’s fuelling system beyond the point needed to maintain the set speed.

Speed Sensing

The System 80 monitors vehicle speed through the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) — typically a pulse-generating sensor driven by the gearbox output shaft or speedometer drive. The unit counts the pulses per unit of time and calculates the vehicle’s road speed. During installation, the system is calibrated to the specific vehicle’s speed sensor characteristics and tyre rolling radius.

Control Logic

Despite being classified as a “mechanical” speed limiter — because it acts on a mechanical throttle cable — the System 80 incorporates electronic control logic. A microprocessor-based controller reads the speed signal, calculates the required throttle restriction, and drives the actuator accordingly. The control algorithm is closed-loop, meaning it continuously adjusts the actuator position to maintain the set speed as accurately as possible.
