Not every vehicle leaves the factory with the speed limiter your operation needs, and even those that do rarely offer the calibration, tracking, and support a fleet wants. What Is an Aftermarket Speed Limiter?

An aftermarket speed limiter is one fitted to a vehicle after it has been built, rather than installed on the production line by the manufacturer. It is also called a retrofit speed limiter.

Aftermarket systems are the norm in UK fleets for good reasons:

  • They can be fitted to almost any make and model, old or new, so you standardise one system across a mixed fleet.
  • They are calibrated to the exact limit your vehicle class requires, and recalibrated when the vehicle or the rules change.

The 6 Things to Compare Before You Buy

Whichever supplier you look at, judge them against these six criteria. They are the factors that decide whether a speed limiter keeps you compliant and saves you money, or becomes a maintenance headache.

1. Type approval and certification

A speed limiter is only worth fitting if it is legally recognised. Look for EU/ECE R89 type approval and independent certification from bodies such as UTAC, TUV, and the UK’s VCA. Without approval, the device may not satisfy a DVSA inspection.

2. Electronic (DBW) or mechanical

Drive-By-Wire (DBW) electronic limiters intercept the throttle signal and are accurate to around +/- 1 km/h. Mechanical limiters restrict fuel and are less precise. 3. Tracking and telematics integration

A basic limiter caps speed and nothing else. If you also want to know where your vehicles are and how they are driven, choosing a limiter that includes GPS tracking saves you a second installation and a second supplier.

4. Installation network and lead times

A speed limiter is only as good as its fitting. Check whether the supplier has a nationwide network of approved installers who can come to your depot, and what the lead time is. A national network keeps vehicles on the road and downtime low.

5. Support, warranty, and recalibration

Vehicles change, rules change, and devices need periodic recalibration. Ask about warranty length, technical support, and how recalibration is handled across the life of the vehicle.

6. Total cost of ownership

Look past the unit price. Factor in installation, any subscription for tracking, recalibration, and the fuel and insurance savings the system delivers. The cheapest device is rarely the lowest total cost.
