What Is a Speed Limiter?

  5. Continuous regulation: As long as the driver keeps the accelerator pressed, the speed limiter maintains the maximum speed. If the driver lifts off and then reaccelerates, the limiter engages again as the threshold speed is approached.

This entire process happens in milliseconds and is virtually transparent to the driver, apart from the vehicle’s inability to exceed the maximum speed.

Types of Speed Limiters

Are Speed Limiters Mandatory in the UK?

Yes, for certain vehicle categories. Under UK law:

  • Goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes GVW must be fitted with a speed limiter set to 56mph (90 km/h). This has been a legal requirement since 1992.
