How Does a Speed Limiter Work? A Technical Explainer
Speed limiters are fitted to millions of commercial vehicles worldwide, but how do they actually prevent a vehicle from exceeding a set speed? Understanding the technology helps fleet managers make informed decisions about which system is right for their fleet.
This article explains the engineering behind modern speed limiters, from Drive-By-Wire electronic systems to GPS-based zone control.
The Basic Principle
Every speed limiter operates on the same fundamental principle: monitor the vehicle’s current speed and, when it reaches the pre-set maximum, reduce engine power to prevent further acceleration.
The difference between speed limiter types lies in how they achieve this power reduction and how they detect vehicle speed.
Drive-By-Wire (DBW) Electronic Speed Limiters
Drive-By-Wire technology is the standard for modern commercial vehicle speed limiters, and it is the technology AutoKontrol pioneered in the 1980s.
How DBW Works
In modern vehicles (roughly 2000 onwards), the accelerator pedal is not physically connected to the engine by a cable. Instead, the pedal sends an electronic voltage signal to the Engine Control Unit (ECU), which then controls the throttle opening. This is the “Drive-By-Wire” system.
A DBW speed limiter sits between the accelerator pedal sensor and the ECU, intercepting the electronic throttle signal. Here is the process:

Speed input: The speed limiter receives the vehicle’s current speed from the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) or reads it directly from the CAN bus network.

Comparison: The onboard microprocessor continuously compares the current speed to the pre-set maximum speed stored in its memory.

Normal operation: When the vehicle is below the set speed, the limiter passes the accelerator pedal signal through to the ECU unchanged. The driver feels no difference.

Speed threshold reached: As the vehicle approaches the maximum speed, the limiter begins to reduce the throttle signal. It does this progressively — not instantaneously — creating a smooth deceleration curve.

Speed maintained: If the driver continues to press the accelerator, the limiter holds the throttle signal at the level required to maintain the maximum speed. The vehicle cannot accelerate further.

Driver releases throttle: When the driver lifts off the accelerator (for example, when going downhill or approaching a junction), the limiter returns to passive mode.
Why DBW Is Superior

Mechanical Speed Limiters
Older speed limiters use mechanical means to restrict fuel supply to the engine. These systems physically limit the movement of the fuel injection pump lever or throttle cable.
Mechanical speed limiters are less precise than DBW systems (typically +/- 3-5 km/h accuracy) and cannot be configured as easily. They are generally only found on older vehicles with mechanical fuel injection systems that pre-date electronic engine management.
For most modern fleets, electronic DBW speed limiters are the better choice due to their superior accuracy, reliability, and compatibility.
GPS-Based Speed Limiting (GeoKontrol)
GPS-based speed limiting represents the next evolution of speed control technology. AutoKontrol’s GeoKontrol system uses satellite positioning to automatically adjust speed limits based on the vehicle’s geographic location.
How GeoKontrol Works
- GPS receiver: The unit contains a GPS receiver that continuously tracks the vehicle’s position.
- Zone database: A database of geographic zones is stored in the unit’s memory. Each zone has an associated speed limit.
- Geofence detection: When the vehicle’s GPS position enters a defined zone, the system automatically changes the speed limit to the zone’s setting.
- Speed limiting: The system then limits vehicle speed to the zone-specific threshold using the same DBW throttle control technology.
For example, a vehicle might have the following zone configuration:
- Depot zone: 5mph maximum (within 200 metres of the depot entrance)
- Urban zone: 20mph maximum (within defined residential areas)
- General road: 56mph maximum (standard HGV motorway limit)
The transitions between zones are seamless — the driver does not need to do anything. The system automatically detects the zone change and adjusts the speed limit accordingly.

What Happens in Practice?
From a driver’s perspective, a properly installed speed limiter is almost invisible during normal driving. The only noticeable effect is that the vehicle will not accelerate beyond the set speed, even with the accelerator pedal fully depressed.
The speed reduction is gradual — there is no jerking, stalling, or sudden loss of power. Most drivers adapt to speed-limited vehicles within a few days and many report that driving becomes less stressful, as the pressure to maintain high speeds is removed.
