The Challenge

Unacceptable Incident Rates

A multinational mining company operating a large open-pit gold mine in West Africa was facing a serious vehicle safety crisis. Over a 24-month period, the site had recorded 47 vehicle incidents classified as “significant” — including rollovers, collisions with infrastructure, pedestrian near-misses, and haul road accidents. Three of these incidents resulted in serious injuries requiring medical evacuation.

The site’s vehicle fleet comprised 150 units operating across a sprawling 12-square-kilometre concession area, with different speed requirements in different zones — the open pit, haul roads, processing plant area, camp and accommodation zones, and the public road connecting the mine to the nearest town.

Multiple Speed Zones, No Effective Control

The mine had posted speed limit signs throughout the concession and issued strict speed policies to all drivers. However, with no technological enforcement, compliance was poor. GPS telematics data showed that:

  • 78% of haul road journeys involved at least one instance of exceeding the 40 km/h site limit
  • Light vehicles regularly exceeded 80 km/h on internal roads with a 30 km/h limit
  • Crew buses were recorded at speeds above 60 km/h in the camp zone, where the limit was 20 km/h

Speed warnings and disciplinary action had limited effect. The fundamental problem was that drivers — under pressure to maintain production schedules — consistently exceeded speed limits when they believed they were not being observed.

Regulatory and Corporate Compliance Pressure

The mining company faced compliance pressure from multiple directions:

  • Nigerian FRSC regulations required speed limiters on all commercial vehicles operating on public roads
  • The company’s global safety standards mandated speed management technology across all operations
  • International mining industry best practice (ICMM guidelines) increasingly expected technological speed control
  • Insurance underwriters were threatening premium increases unless speed management was demonstrably improved

The Limitations of Fixed Speed Limiters

A conventional speed limiter set to a single maximum speed was insufficient for this operation. The mine needed different speed limits in different areas — 40 km/h on haul roads, 20 km/h in the camp, 15 km/h near the processing plant, and 80 km/h on the public road to town. A device that could only restrict to one fixed speed could not address this requirement.

The Solution

GeoKontrol: Zone-Based Speed Control

After evaluating available technologies, the mining company selected AutoKontrol’s GeoKontrol system for fleet-wide deployment. GeoKontrol combines the System 80 drive-by-wire speed limiter with GPS-based geofencing, enabling different speed limits to be applied automatically as vehicles move between defined geographic zones.

For a detailed explanation of the technology, see our guide to GeoKontrol zone speed limiting.

Zone Configuration

Working with the mine’s safety team, AutoKontrol configured the following speed zones across the concession:

ZoneSpeed LimitRationale
Open pit15 km/hPedestrian and heavy equipment interaction
Haul roads40 km/hGradient, dust, and vehicle interaction risk
Processing plant15 km/hPedestrian density, confined spaces
Workshop and stores20 km/hPedestrian and reversing vehicle risk
Camp and accommodation20 km/hPedestrian safety, 24-hour occupation
Public road to town80 km/hNational speed limit, FRSC compliance
Mine entrance and gate10 km/hSecurity checkpoint, barrier operation

Phased Deployment

The 150-vehicle fleet was equipped over 10 weeks:

  • Phase 1 (Weeks 1-3): 40 haul trucks and water bowsers — the highest-risk vehicles
  • Phase 2 (Weeks 4-6): 30 crew buses and passenger vehicles — the highest pedestrian interaction risk
  • Phase 3 (Weeks 7-8): 50 light vehicles (pickups and SUVs) — the most frequent speed offenders
  • Phase 4 (Weeks 9-10): 30 service trucks and specialist vehicles

AutoKontrol’s installation team worked on-site, fitting vehicles during scheduled maintenance windows to minimise production impact. All installations included the TrackSpeed GPS tracking component, providing the mine’s control room with real-time fleet visibility.

Integration with Mine Safety Systems

GeoKontrol data was integrated with the mine’s existing safety management system, providing:

  • Real-time speed compliance dashboards for the safety team
  • Automated alerts when any vehicle approached a zone boundary at excessive speed
  • Daily compliance reports for the mine manager and corporate safety team
  • Monthly trend analysis for insurance and regulatory reporting

What the Mine Safety Manager Said

“We had tried everything — signs, training, warnings, disciplinary action. Nothing worked sustainably because the fundamental problem was human behaviour under production pressure. GeoKontrol changed the equation entirely. When the vehicle physically cannot exceed the speed limit for the zone it is in, compliance becomes automatic. We went from hundreds of daily speed violations to single figures almost overnight. The 84% reduction in significant incidents is the number that matters most to us — every one of those prevented incidents could have been a fatality. The financial savings are substantial, but it is the safety transformation that keeps me recommending AutoKontrol to every mining operation I speak with.”

Key Takeaways

  • Zone-based speed control solves the multi-speed-limit challenge that fixed speed limiters cannot address — essential for mining, construction, and other operations with variable speed requirements across a single site
  • Automatic enforcement removes the human factor — drivers comply because the technology ensures they do, not because they choose to
  • The incident reduction is transformational — 84% fewer significant vehicle incidents directly protects lives and livelihoods
  • Financial ROI is rapid — the combination of reduced vehicle damage, lower insurance premiums, and fewer production delays delivers payback within 5 months
  • Regulatory compliance is achieved as a by-product — FRSC compliance on public roads is automatic when the GeoKontrol system is configured to the correct limit
  • Real-time visibility changes safety culture — when the safety team can see every vehicle’s speed in real time, the entire culture shifts from reactive to proactive
  • Corporate and insurance requirements are comprehensively met — GeoKontrol provides the verifiable, data-backed speed management that corporate safety standards and insurance underwriters demand
