Traditional speed limiters set a single maximum speed for the vehicle — typically 56mph for HGVs or 62mph for buses. This is effective for motorway and open-road speed management, but it does nothing to control vehicle speed in the locations where most serious fleet-related injuries actually occur: depots, yards, customer sites, and residential areas.

The Depot Safety Problem
HSE data shows that approximately 50 people are killed each year in workplace transport incidents in the UK, with many more seriously injured. How GeoKontrol Works
GeoKontrol is a feature of the TrackSpeed combined speed limiter and GPS tracking system. It uses the vehicle’s GPS position, determined by the ScorpionTrack Fleet tracking component, to identify when the vehicle enters or leaves a predefined speed zone.
Zone Definition
Fleet managers define speed zones using the ScorpionTrack Fleet web portal. A zone is simply an area drawn on a map with an associated speed limit. Zones can be any shape — circles, rectangles, or custom polygons — and any size, from a small yard area to an entire town.
Each zone has a name, a maximum speed, and optionally a time schedule. For example, a school zone might have a 20mph limit that only applies during term-time school hours, reverting to the default maximum at other times.
There is no limit to the number of zones that can be created. National fleet operators typically define zones for all of their depots, customer sites, and any location-specific speed requirements.
Automatic Speed Adjustment
When the vehicle crosses the boundary of a speed zone, GeoKontrol automatically adjusts the speed limiter setting. The transition is smooth and progressive — the vehicle decelerates naturally as the driver lifts off the accelerator, rather than braking suddenly.
When the vehicle leaves the zone, the speed limit automatically reverts to the next applicable zone, or to the vehicle’s default maximum speed if no zone applies.
The driver is informed of the speed limit change through a dashboard-mounted display or indicator. The system is transparent — the driver knows what the speed limit is and why it has changed.
Zone Nesting and Priority
Zones can overlap, or nest inside each other. GeoKontrol always applies the lowest applicable speed limit. For example, an operator might define a 20mph zone for an industrial estate, with a 5mph zone for the specific loading bay area within it. When the vehicle is in the loading bay area, the 5mph limit applies. When it moves into the broader industrial estate but outside the loading bay zone, the 20mph limit applies. When it leaves the industrial estate entirely, the default maximum applies.
This nesting approach allows fleet managers to create layered speed management that mirrors the real-world environment.
