The Principle: Geofenced Speed Enforcement

GeoKontrol works by linking the AutoKontrol speed limiter (System 80 Drive-By-Wire) with GPS position data from the TrackSpeed integrated tracking unit. The GPS unit continuously reports the vehicle’s position. When the system determines that the vehicle has entered a defined zone, it signals the speed limiter to enforce the speed limit configured for that zone.

This is not an advisory alert to the driver. It is active enforcement — the vehicle physically cannot exceed the speed limit assigned to the zone it is currently occupying.

Typical Zone Configuration Scenarios

Most operators will configure a combination of the following zone types, each with an appropriate speed limit:

1. Depot and Yard Zones (5–15 mph)

The most common starting point for GPS zone management is the operator’s own depot or yard. Pedestrian and vehicle interaction in loading/unloading areas is a significant accident risk. A GPS zone around the depot boundary enforces a low speed automatically as soon as the vehicle enters the site — without relying on signage, driver awareness, or site security enforcement.

Typical configuration:

  • Zone boundary: depot perimeter fence line or site entrance
  • Speed limit: 5–10 mph
  • Application: all vehicles

2. Urban Delivery Zones (20–30 mph)

For operators with urban delivery routes — particularly those covering residential areas, town centres, or areas covered by 20 mph zones — a GeoKontrol urban zone can enforce a lower speed than the vehicle’s standard road limit, matching local speed restrictions and reducing the risk of incidents in areas with high pedestrian activity.

3. Standard Road Zone (40–56 mph)

The baseline road speed for regulated HGVs (56 mph in the UK) is set as the vehicle’s standard speed limiter configuration. This applies everywhere outside a specific geofenced zone. No explicit zone configuration is required for this — it is the default.

For operators with below-statutory fleet policies (e.g., a maximum 50 mph on all routes for fuel economy or insurance reasons), this baseline is set at the policy limit rather than the statutory maximum.

4. Motorway and Trunk Route Zones (56–62 mph)

Some operators configure a higher speed zone for motorway running — for example, PSVs authorised to run at up to 62 mph on motorways. The motorway zone allows the system to automatically increase the permitted speed when the vehicle joins a motorway, then return to the standard limit when it exits to A-roads.

7. Construction Site and Plant Zones (5–10 mph)

Plant hire operators and construction fleets use GeoKontrol zone management to enforce site speed limits for vehicles moving within active construction sites. This is a Health and Safety obligation as much as a regulatory one.

Creating and Managing Zones via ScorpionTrack Fleet

  • Changes are pushed to vehicles automatically on next connectivity window

Zone libraries: For operators with many sites, zones can be organised into libraries — for example, all customer sites, all depot zones, all school zones — and managed as groups.

Zone Transition Behaviour: How the System Handles Boundaries

A well-designed GPS zone system does not cause abrupt speed changes that could create safety risks. GeoKontrol manages zone transitions in the following way:

Entering a lower-speed zone (e.g., moving from road to depot at 10 mph):

  • As the vehicle approaches the zone boundary, the system detects proximity
  • When the GPS fix confirms boundary crossing, the lower limit is applied
  • The speed limiter reduces the maximum speed smoothly — the vehicle decelerates to the new limit if it was above it
  • No driver input is required; the system manages the transition

Exiting a lower-speed zone (e.g., leaving depot back to standard road speed):

  • As the vehicle exits the zone boundary, the standard road limit is restored
  • The driver can accelerate normally up to the restored limit

Overlapping zones (hierarchical speed management): Where zones overlap — for example, a customer site zone within a wider urban zone — the system applies the lower speed limit. The hierarchy always prioritises the most restrictive applicable zone.

GPS signal degradation: If GPS signal is temporarily lost at a zone boundary, the system applies the most conservative interpretation — defaulting to the lower speed limit until a confident position fix is restored.

Reporting and Analytics by Zone

One of the most valuable aspects of GPS zone management is the rich analytics it generates — not just for individual vehicles, but per zone across the fleet.
