Geofenced Speed Control: Automatic Speed Limits for Yards, Sites and School Zones

Geofenced speed control lowers a vehicle’s maximum speed automatically when it enters an area you have drawn on a map, and restores it when the vehicle leaves. Nothing depends on the driver noticing a sign. NHTSA’s latest data shows why the places you can draw on a map matter: speeding was involved in 34% of fatal crashes in construction and maintenance zones, against 28% outside them.

What is geofenced speed control?

A geofence is a virtual boundary around a real place. A geofenced speed limiter knows where the vehicle is by GPS, checks the position against your zone map, and applies the speed cap you set for that zone.

It is different from a plain speed limiter, which holds one cap everywhere. It is also different from an alert. A speeding alert tells the office after the event. Geofenced control stops the vehicle being asked for more power in the first place. Brakes and steering are untouched, and outside the zone the driver gets the normal cap back.

How does it work, step by step?

Using our GeoKontrol 2 as the example, as described on its product page:

  1. The unit fitted to the vehicle reads GPS (GPS, GLONASS and Galileo) and works with electronic-throttle vehicles (drive-by-wire or SENT).
  2. You draw zones in a web portal, as polygons or circles, and give each a speed limit.
  3. You can set a schedule per zone, such as a school zone active during school hours, and different limits for different vehicle groups.
  4. Zone changes are sent to vehicles over the air, so nobody visits each vehicle to update them.
  5. When the vehicle crosses the boundary, the cap changes automatically. There is nothing for the driver to press.

The zone limits are yours. The numbers in the examples below are examples of what a fleet might choose, not legal limits.

Where do US fleets use geofenced speed zones?

Yards, depots and distribution centers. Slow-speed areas with people on foot, forklifts and reversing vehicles. A fleet might set a low walking-pace cap inside the gate and release it at the exit. For more on how this works in a yard, see GeoKontrol for depot and yard speed management.

Ports and terminals. Ports and terminals can have their own site speed rules for visiting trucks. A zone cap set to match them applies from the gate, whatever the driver is used to elsewhere.

Campuses and large facilities. Hospitals, universities, airports and industrial parks have internal roads shared with pedestrians. A zone can follow the property line and hold the cap you choose.

Construction and utility work zones. This is where NHTSA’s number bites. A work zone changes as the job moves, so a fixed sign is not enough. You can redraw a zone and push it to the vehicles. NHTSA’s report puts speeding in 34% of fatal crashes in construction and maintenance zones. For site operators, see also construction site speed limiters.

School zones. Speed matters most where children cross. A scheduled zone can hold a lower cap during school hours only. See school zone speed limiters for buses.

Residential delivery areas. Last-mile vans spend their day among homes, and a zone can hold them to a lower cap there.

Why bother, when drivers know the speed limit?

Because speed is more dangerous than it feels. NHTSA’s Speeding: 2024 Data says stopping distance quadruples when speed doubles. It also found 87% of speeding-related deaths in 2024 happened on non-interstate roads, which is where yards, campuses, school zones and delivery routes sit.

Signs depend on the driver seeing them. Drivers new to a site, drivers running late and drivers in unfamiliar trucks are where the gaps appear. A geofence does not depend on any of that. It also gives you something to show: a customer, site owner or insurer can see that the cap was applied by the vehicle, not just written in a handbook.

How does geofenced control compare with the other options?

ApproachStops the speeding?Works by location?
Signs and trainingNoYes, but driver-dependent
Telematics speeding alertsNo, reports afterCan flag zones
Fixed fleet speed limiterYesNo, one cap everywhere
Geofenced speed limiterYesYes, zones you set

Many fleets combine a fixed cap for the road with zones for the places that need lower speeds. We set out the choices in fleet speed limiter options compared and the cap itself in speed governor for trucks.

What does it not do?

It does not read road signs. If you have not drawn the zone, nothing changes. It depends on the unit having GPS reception, and your zones are only as accurate as the map you draw. It is not a substitute for site traffic management, and it does not replace the posted limit, which still applies.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is geofenced speed control?

It is a system that changes a vehicle’s maximum speed automatically when it enters a zone you have drawn on a map, then restores the normal cap when it leaves. It uses GPS and needs no driver input.

Can a geofence actually limit speed, or just send an alert?

A geofenced speed limiter limits speed. It stops the engine being asked for more power above the zone cap. Alert-only systems report the speeding without preventing it.

Can I use geofenced speed control in work zones?

Yes, you can draw a zone around a work site and move or resize it as the job changes. NHTSA reports speeding was involved in 34% of fatal crashes in construction and maintenance zones in 2024.

Can different vehicles have different limits in the same zone?

Yes, GeoKontrol 2 lets you assign different limits to different vehicle groups within one zone.

Does GeoKontrol 2 fit my vehicles?

It works on any vehicle with an electronic (drive-by-wire or SENT) throttle, which covers almost all modern vans, trucks and buses.

How do US fleets buy AutoKontrol speed limiters?

Through Scorpion, our parent group’s US team. Start with the quote form and fitting is agreed per job, by your own technicians or our engineers and partners.

Put speed limits where the risk is

Your riskiest miles are probably the slowest ones: the yard, the site, the school run. Tell us what you run and how many vehicles, and we will match a limiter to each one and price it. Get a quote or book a free consultation. How US fleets buy is set out on our US speed limiters page.

AutoKontrol has made speed limiters in Britain since 1985 and supplies fleets in more than 50 countries, with approvals including ISO 9001, UTAC, TÜV and VCA.
