Myth 1: “Speed limiters make vehicles dangerous on motorways”
The claim: If a vehicle is limited to 56mph and traffic is flowing at 70mph+, it creates a hazard by being slower than the surrounding traffic.
The reality: HGVs over 7.5 tonnes have been legally required to be limited to 56mph since 1994. The UK motorway network operates daily with millions of vehicles at different speeds — cars, motorcycles, vans, lorries, coaches. Differential speeds are a normal feature of multi-lane motorway operation, managed by lane discipline.
The evidence does not support the safety concern. Since speed limiters became mandatory for HGVs, the frequency and severity of HGV-related motorway collisions has reduced significantly. A vehicle travelling at a consistent, controlled speed is not inherently hazardous. An unlimitless vehicle capable of travelling at 80mph+ in emergency or lapse-of-attention situations is.

Myth 2: “Drivers can easily bypass or disable speed limiters”
The claim: Speed limiters are just an inconvenience that determined drivers can override.
The reality: This was a partial truth 20 years ago, when some early speed limiter systems were less sophisticated. Myth 4: “Speed limiters are only for HGVs”
The claim: Speed limiters are a heavy goods vehicle requirement, irrelevant to vans, cars, and light commercial vehicles.
The reality: While HGVs and coaches have mandatory speed limiter requirements, the technology and its benefits apply to any vehicle. Many fleet operators choose to fit speed limiters to light commercial vehicles (LCVs) and even cars for exactly the same reasons they are mandatory on HGVs — safety, fuel savings, insurance, and legal protection.

Myth 6: “Speed limiters increase journey times significantly”
The claim: Limiting vehicles to 56mph or 70mph adds hours to journeys.
The reality: The mathematics of this myth rarely survive scrutiny. Consider a 200-mile motorway journey:

The fuel and insurance savings typically deliver far greater financial value than the marginal schedule impact.
Myth 7: “GPS speed limiters don’t work in tunnels or poor signal areas”
