Delivery Van Speed Limiter: Last-Mile Fleets, Fuel and Risk
In 2024, 52% of US speeding-related deaths happened on urban roads that are not interstates, the kind of road a delivery route is made of. A delivery van speed limiter caps the van’s top speed so the stretch between stops cannot turn into fuel waste or a crash. It works on every van in the fleet the same way, whoever is driving.
Where do delivery vans actually get into speeding trouble?
Not on the interstate. NHTSA’s Speeding: 2024 Data (DOT HS 813 823, July 2026) found 11,288 deaths in speeding-related crashes in 2024, 29% of all US traffic deaths. Of the 11,157 with a known road type, 5,775 (52%) were on urban non-interstate roads, 3,985 (36%) on rural non-interstate roads and only 13% on interstates. Put another way, 87% were off the interstate.
Those are the roads of a delivery route: arterials, residential streets, industrial estates and rural drops. A hurried van between stops is speeding where there are driveways, parked cars and pedestrians.
NHTSA also notes that stopping distance quadruples when speed doubles. A limiter keeps the top end in check on every trip.
Do speed limiters work on vans, not just trucks?
Yes. The federal proposal to require speed limiters, which FMCSA and NHTSA withdrew effective July 24, 2025, would only have covered heavy vehicles over 26,000 lb. Any van with a rating under 26,000 lb was outside it, so check the rating plate on yours. Whether your vans are limited is entirely up to you.
An aftermarket limiter fits vans, pickups and trucks, old and new, so one policy can cover the whole fleet. Our guide to truck and van speed limiters covers the difference between an engine setting and a sealed limiter, and the pickup and van fleet post has the van-specific detail.
How much fuel does a speed limiter save a delivery van?
The Department of Energy’s fueleconomy.gov says gas mileage usually decreases rapidly at speeds above 50 mph, and that observing the speed limit improves fuel economy by 7% to 14%. It also says each 5 mph over 50 mph is like paying an extra $0.30 a gallon, on a basis of $4.28 gas.
For real fleet evidence, a one-year trial of 177 vans and 30 trucks (CE Delft for Novem, 2009) measured an average 5% fuel saving after speed limiters were fitted. That is a fleet average, because only the fast miles change. A UK government reference, the Department for Transport’s TAG data book, puts a diesel van at 14.5% less fuel per mile at 60 mph than at 68 mph.
Here is the arithmetic with example numbers. These are our assumptions, not a measured fleet, so replace them with yours:
- A gas van doing 25,000 miles a year at 18 mpg burns about 1,390 gallons.
- At $4.27 a gallon (EIA’s weekly regular gasoline average for the week of October 26, 2026) that is about $5,930 a year.
- A 5% saving is about 70 gallons, or about $300 per van.
- Across 100 vans, about $29,600 a year.
For diesel vans, the same EIA page puts on-highway diesel at $6.35 a gallon for that week. Our US fuel prices data and fuel calculator lets you put in your own mileage and mpg.
Can a limiter stop speeding in the depot and on site?
A top-speed cap does not help in a 10 mph yard. That is what GeoKontrol 2 is for. It sets speed limits by location, so a depot, a loading dock or a campus gets a low cap, and the van returns to its normal cap outside the zone. See GeoKontrol depot zone speed management for how depots use it.
The same zone idea works for any site where you want vans slow, and the fleet owner sets the limit.
How do you prove the cap was in force?
When a customer, an insurer or a lawyer asks, you want a record, not an assurance. TrackSpeed combines a speed limiter and GPS tracking in one device with one install, so you can show the limit that was set and where the van actually went.
We make no promise about what an insurer will do with that record. We do not publish insurer discounts, and you should ask your own insurer what evidence it values.
How do you run one policy across a mixed van fleet?
Delivery fleets rarely buy one model. You may have gas and diesel vans from several makers, bought in different years, some leased and some owned. Engine speed settings differ by make and often need the maker’s software to change. A sealed aftermarket limiter lets the fleet owner set one cap policy and hold it.
AutoKontrol makes units for different engine types:
| Van | Unit |
|---|---|
| Electronic throttle (drive-by-wire) | DBW speed limiter |
| SENT throttle sensors | SENT speed limiter |
| Mechanical fuel control | System 80 |
| Cap plus GPS proof | TrackSpeed |
| Depot and site zones | GeoKontrol 2 |
Any van with an electronic (drive-by-wire) throttle takes the DBW unit, so a mixed fleet of makes needs no model-by-model checks. All units are sealed and set by the fleet owner. They work on the throttle signal or fuel line, not through the OBD port. For the UK-style view of delivery fleets, see speed limiters for delivery fleets.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are delivery vans required to have speed limiters in the US?
No. The federal proposal covered heavy vehicles over 26,000 lb and was withdrawn on July 24, 2025. Limiting your vans is your choice.
How much fuel does a speed limiter save on a delivery van?
The Department of Energy says observing the speed limit improves fuel economy by 7% to 14%. An independent trial of 177 vans and 30 trucks measured an average 5% across the fleet.
Where do speeding deaths happen?
NHTSA found 87% of speeding-related deaths in 2024 were off the interstate, and 52% were on urban non-interstate roads.
Can I set a lower speed limit in the depot only?
Yes. GeoKontrol 2 applies a lower limit inside zones you define, such as a depot, and the normal cap applies outside.
Can a driver change the speed cap on a van?
The unit is sealed and set by the fleet owner, so drivers cannot change it. Below the cap, the driver has full control.
How do US fleets buy AutoKontrol speed limiters?
Through Scorpion, our parent group’s US team. Start with the quote form, and fitting is agreed per job, by your own technicians or our engineers and partners.
