Limitador de Velocidad para Camionetas: Pickups and Vans

Ask a fleet manager in Latin America which vehicles worry them most on speed and the answer is often not the big trucks. It is the camionetas. Pickups and vans are everywhere: sales teams, technicians, supervisors, couriers, contractors, service crews. They are quick, they are driven by many different people and they cover the most kilometres per vehicle in the fleet. A limitador de velocidad para camionetas is how a fleet puts a number on that behaviour and holds it.

This guide covers what a limiter does on a pickup or van, how to choose between the units, and what to send us so we can recommend the right one for your camioneta, Sprinter or pickup.

Why light vehicles deserve a limiter

Heavy trucks tend to get the attention, but light vehicles produce the exposure.

  • They are driven fast. A pickup accelerates easily and has the power to hold highway speed without effort. Drivers rarely notice how fast they are going.
  • They are driven by many people. Shared vehicles, pool vehicles and contractor vehicles have no single owner who cares about the fuel or the tyres.
  • They go where the fleet’s risk is. Site roads, mine access roads, rural tracks, town centres, school areas and depots.
  • Their cost adds up. Fuel, tyres, brakes, accident repairs, insurance and downtime multiply across a fleet of dozens or hundreds.

A limiter takes the biggest controllable variable, speed, out of each individual driver’s mood.

What the limiter does on a pickup or van

The limiter reads the vehicle’s speed and, as it nears the set figure, trims the throttle or fuel demand so the vehicle cannot go faster. The driver keeps full control of steering and braking, and can drive at any speed below the limit. Above it, more pedal does nothing.

How it does that depends on how the engine is controlled. Our electronic vs mechanical speed limiters article has the long version. The short version is below.

DBW for electronic throttle

Many current pickups and vans have an electronic throttle: the pedal sends an electrical signal to the engine control unit instead of pulling a cable. The DBW speed limiter sits in that signal path and trims it smoothly as the vehicle approaches the set speed. The result feels natural to the driver, with no sudden cut, and it holds the speed you chose.

Fitting takes about 1.5 hours. It is available worldwide.

System 80 for older diesels

Older diesel pickups and vans with mechanical fuel control have no electronic throttle signal to work with. System 80 is a mechanical limiter that acts on the fuel line instead. It fits in about 60 minutes and holds speed to within +/-1-2 km/h. It is the unit for the older workhorse camioneta that is still earning its keep.

TrackSpeed for proof

If a client, an insurer or your own management wants to see that vehicles stay within the limit, TrackSpeed combines the limiter with ScorpionTrack GNSS tracking. You get the held speed and a record of where each vehicle goes and how it drives. For a contractor fleet working on someone else’s site, that record answers speed questions with data.

GeoKontrol for zones

A pickup that travels from a highway to a mine, a port or a school area does not need the same limit all the way. GeoKontrol applies GPS geofenced zone speed limits, so the vehicle runs at one speed on the open road and a lower one inside the zone.

Which pickup, van or Sprinter?

You will see names such as Hilux, NP300 and Sprinter on fleet lists, and the first question a manager asks is whether a specific model is covered. The honest answer depends on the exact vehicle: model, year, engine and market all change how the throttle is controlled. Within one model name you can find electronic and mechanical versions, depending on the year and engine.

So send us the details instead of guessing. For each vehicle type, give us:

  1. Make and model, for example the pickup or the Sprinter.
  2. Model year.
  3. Engine type and fuel, diesel or petrol.
  4. Number of vehicles of that kind.
  5. Speed you want to hold and whether the vehicles cross different zones.

We will come back with the unit that fits each group. Most mixed fleets end up with a DBW for the newer vehicles and System 80 for the older diesels, with TrackSpeed or GeoKontrol added where proof or zones matter.

What speed to set on a camioneta

The set speed is the fleet’s policy, and it has to sit within the legal limits where the vehicle runs. Those limits differ by country and by vehicle class, so check the road and the class. In Brazil, art. 61 of the Código de Trânsito Brasileiro sets 110 km/h on rural dual carriageways and 100 km/h on single carriageways for cars, vans and motorcycles where there is no sign. In Colombia, Ley 1239 de 2008 sets a maximum of 80 km/h on national and departmental highways for public service, cargo and school transport vehicles. Argentina’s Resolución 19/2016 sets 100 km/h for M2 passenger vehicles. Our truck speed limits in Latin America page and the laws hub cover the heavy vehicle side.

Within those ceilings, many fleets choose a lower number for reasons of their own: fuel, tyre wear, site rules, insurance or the condition of the roads. Use the fleet fuel savings calculator to see what a lower set speed means for your own fleet, and read the vans fleet guide for more on running a light-vehicle fleet.

Fitting and support

We ship direct to your fleet with fitting instructions. Your own workshop team can fit the unit, or you can use a local auto-electrician or workshop of your choice. The fit times, about 1.5 hours for a DBW and about 60 minutes for System 80 and TrackSpeed, mean a camioneta is back in service quickly. Our technical team supports you remotely.

AutoKontrol is part of Scorpion Group, which has built vehicle electronics since 1973. Our units are designed and manufactured in the UK and are ECE R89 type-approved.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you fit a limitador de velocidad to a camioneta?

Yes. A pickup or van with an electronic throttle takes the DBW speed limiter, and an older diesel with mechanical fuel control takes System 80. Send us the make, model and year and we will confirm which fits.

Does it work on a Sprinter or a pickup such as a Hilux or NP300?

The unit depends on the exact vehicle, because the throttle system varies with model, year and engine. Send us the make, model, year and engine type of each vehicle and we will tell you which unit suits it.

Will the driver notice the limiter?

The vehicle drives normally below the set speed. As it nears the limit, the DBW trims the throttle smoothly, and above the limit extra pedal travel does nothing.

Can I see how my camionetas are driven?

Yes, with TrackSpeed. It pairs the limiter with ScorpionTrack GNSS tracking, so you see location and driving as well as holding the speed.

Can my own workshop fit it?

Yes. We ship direct with fitting instructions, and your workshop or a local auto-electrician can fit it. We support remotely.
