ProMaster Speed Limiter: Ram's Factory Limiter Is a Driver Button
Ram’s own ProMaster manual describes an Active Speed Limiter as a feature “if equipped”, with a button on the steering wheel that lets the driver program the van’s maximum speed. A firm press of the accelerator goes past it. That makes it a driver aid, not a fleet cap.
We read the 2022 ProMaster Owner’s Manual published by Ram for the US, and checked the 2026 ProMaster / ProMaster EV Owner Handbook for the same warning lights.
Does the Ram ProMaster have a factory speed limiter?
On some vans, yes. The 2022 manual says it describes features that are “either standard or optional” and may include equipment not on your van. It lists three speed features, each marked “if equipped” or set in a menu:
- Active Speed Limiter (pages 78 to 79). “This feature allows you to program the maximum speed of travel for your vehicle.”
- Intelligent Speed Assist (pages 79 to 80). It combines the Active Speed Limiter with Traffic Sign Assist, which uses a windshield camera to read speed limit signs.
- Speed Warning. In the vehicle settings you can “set the vehicle speed limit, which the driver is notified through a visual and acoustic signaling”. It warns, it does not limit.
The 2026 handbook still lists “Speed Limiter Fail” and “Speed Warning” among its warning lights. We could not open the 2023, 2024 and 2025 manuals, so check your own model year’s manual before you assume the same equipment.
How does the ProMaster Active Speed Limiter work?
The driver turns it on with the Active Speed Limiter button on the right of the steering wheel, then uses the SET buttons to choose the target speed. Per the manual:
- It can be set with the van stationary or moving.
- Holding a SET button changes the speed in 5 mph steps.
- Each time it is switched on, it returns to the last value programmed.
- Cruise Control and Adaptive Cruise Control are unavailable while it is in use.
- Fully pressing the accelerator exceeds the set speed. An audible alert sounds, the light flashes and a message shows. The limiter comes back once speed falls below the set value.
- The driver turns it off with the same button, or pauses it with CANC.
Who can change the ProMaster’s speed setting?
Whoever is driving. In the manual, every control for these features sits on the steering wheel or the driver’s settings menu, and none is described as locked. We found no Ram source describing a fleet-owner lock, a seal, a way to build a fixed cap into an order, or a record of settings. If you need one, ask your Ram dealer in writing and treat anything undocumented as unavailable.
Where do the factory features fall short for a fleet?
Think in terms of who holds the control:
- Driver-adjustable. A cap the driver sets can be reset, overridden or switched off between stops.
- Not on every van. The manual says “if equipped”, so a mixed ProMaster group could have limiters on some vans and none on others.
- Cruise conflict. While the limiter is in use, cruise control is unavailable, so drivers who like cruise on the interstate have a reason to switch the limiter off.
- Mixed fleets. ProMaster, Ford Transit and Mercedes Sprinter each work differently, so one speed policy needs three procedures.
- Proof. A dashboard setting does not show what was in force last Tuesday.
Where does a sealed aftermarket limiter fit a ProMaster?
It fits where the fleet owner, not the driver, controls the cap. An AutoKontrol unit is sealed and set by the fleet. It stops the engine being asked for more power above the set speed, brakes and steering are untouched, and the driver has full control below the cap. Our units work on the throttle signal, not through the OBD diagnostic port.
Will it fit? Yes. The ProMaster has an electronic (drive-by-wire) throttle, like almost every modern van, and that is what our DBW speed limiter works on. There is no per-model fitment list to check: if the pedal is electronic, the limiter works. Newer vans with SENT digital throttle sensors take the SENT version of the same unit. For the wider picture on vans and pickups, read pickup and van fleet speed limiters and our guide to truck and van speed limiters.
How does an AutoKontrol limiter stop the overrides?
It sits on the throttle signal between the pedal and the engine computer, so it is not a menu setting, a key setting or a workshop parameter. That closes each way round a factory cap:
| Way round a factory cap | With an AutoKontrol limiter |
|---|---|
| Fully press the accelerator to pass the Active Speed Limiter | Pressing harder does nothing above the cap: the engine is never asked for more power |
| Turn it off with the steering wheel button, or reset the speed with SET | There is no driver button: the speed is set by the fleet owner |
| Switch it off to use cruise control | It is not a driver feature, so there is nothing to switch off |
| Buy vans without the option fitted | It does not depend on factory options |
| Unplug or bypass it | The unit is tamper-sealed, and the system detects and records any attempt to bypass or disable it |
The driver still has full control below the cap, and brakes and steering are untouched.
What does limiting a ProMaster save?
fueleconomy.gov says observing the speed limit can improve fuel economy by 7% to 14%. A one-year trial of 177 vans and 30 trucks by CE Delft for Novem (2009) measured an average 5% saving after speed limiters were fitted, a fleet average because only the fast miles change.
Here is an example with assumed numbers. fueleconomy.gov does not rate cargo vans, so the mileage and mpg are our assumptions. Ram’s 2025 ProMaster fact sheet lists a 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6, so we assume gasoline.
- A ProMaster covers 20,000 miles a year at an assumed 15 mpg, which is about 1,330 gallons.
- At the EIA’s regular gasoline average of $4.269 a gallon for the week of October 26, 2026, that is about $5,690 a year.
- A 5% saving is about 67 gallons, or about $285 per van.
- Across 20 vans, 5% is about $5,700 a year, roughly one van’s annual fuel bill.
Use the fuel cost calculator with your own mpg and miles.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Ram ProMaster have a speed limiter?
Ram’s 2022 US owner’s manual describes an Active Speed Limiter marked “if equipped”, which lets the driver program the van’s maximum speed. It also describes Intelligent Speed Assist and a Speed Warning.
Can a driver override the ProMaster speed limiter?
Yes. The manual says fully pressing the accelerator pedal exceeds the programmed maximum speed, with a sound, a flashing light and a message.
Is the ProMaster Speed Warning a speed limiter?
No. It notifies the driver with a message, a symbol and a sound when the set speed is exceeded. It does not stop the van going faster.
Will an AutoKontrol limiter fit my ProMaster?
Yes. The ProMaster has an electronic (drive-by-wire) throttle, which is what our DBW speed limiter works on, so there is no model list to check.
Can a fleet lock the ProMaster’s factory limiter?
We found no Ram source that says so. The controls in the manual are on the steering wheel and the driver’s settings menu. Ask your Ram dealer in writing.
How do US fleets buy AutoKontrol speed limiters?
Through Scorpion, our parent group’s US team. Start with the quote form. Fitting is agreed per job, by your own technicians or our engineers and partners.
