Speed Limiter Installation in France: AutoKontrol’s European Network

Fitting a speed limiter is only half the compliance equation. The installation must be carried out correctly, by qualified personnel, using approved equipment, and with full documentation that satisfies French regulatory authorities. For fleet operators in France or running vehicles through French territory, finding a reliable, approved installation partner is essential.

AutoKontrol has spent decades building a European distributor and installation network that serves fleet operators across France and the wider continent. This article explains how our network operates and what fleet managers should expect from the installation process.

Why Installation Quality Matters in France

French speed limiter enforcement goes beyond simply checking whether a device is present. Inspectors — whether at contrôle technique centres or during roadside checks — examine the quality of the installation itself. Specifically, they look for:

  • Correct wiring and connection to the vehicle’s speed signal source
  • Tamper-evident seals that are properly fitted and intact
  • A speed limiter plate displaying accurate information including the approval number, set speed, installer identity, and installation date
  • Valid installation and calibration certificates issued by a recognised installer

A poorly executed installation, even of a type-approved device, can result in a compliance failure. This is why AutoKontrol works exclusively with trained, approved installation partners who understand both the technical requirements and the documentation standards that French authorities demand.

AutoKontrol’s European Distributor Network

AutoKontrol operates through a network of authorised distributors and installation centres across Europe. In France, our network provides coverage for fleet operators in all major regions, including:

  • Northern France — Hauts-de-France, Normandie, Ile-de-France
  • Eastern France — Grand Est, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes
  • Southern France — Occitanie, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur
  • Western France — Bretagne, Pays de la Loire, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Our distributors are not simply resellers. They are trained installation partners who have completed AutoKontrol’s technical certification programme and are equipped to install, calibrate, and certify System 80 and TrackSpeed devices to the standards required by French law.

How the Network Operates

  1. Fleet operators contact AutoKontrol — either directly or through a local distributor — to discuss their requirements
  2. We identify the nearest approved installation centre to the fleet’s operating base or preferred location
  3. The installation centre schedules fitment at a time that minimises vehicle downtime
  4. Installation is carried out by certified technicians following AutoKontrol’s technical procedures
  5. Full documentation is issued — installation certificate, calibration certificate, and speed limiter plate fitted to the vehicle
  6. Ongoing support — our network provides recalibration, maintenance, and fault diagnosis services

What Happens During a French Installation

A typical System 80 installation on a heavy goods vehicle or bus takes between two and four hours, depending on the vehicle type and accessibility of the engine management system. The process follows these steps:

Vehicle Assessment

The technician begins by assessing the vehicle’s engine management system, identifying the correct speed signal source and determining the optimal mounting location for the System 80 unit. For drive-by-wire vehicles, the system interfaces directly with the electronic throttle control.

Device Fitment

The System 80 unit is mounted in a secure, accessible location within the engine bay or cab. Wiring is routed following AutoKontrol’s technical specifications, ensuring clean installation with no exposed or vulnerable cabling.

Speed Signal Connection

The device is connected to the vehicle’s speed signal — typically from the gearbox output sensor, ABS system, or CAN bus, depending on the vehicle make and model. AutoKontrol provides vehicle-specific wiring guides for all major European commercial vehicle manufacturers.

Calibration

Using calibrated test equipment, the technician sets the speed limiter to the required speed — 90 km/h for N2/N3 goods vehicles or 100 km/h for M2/M3 passenger vehicles. The calibration is verified through a road test or rolling road test where available.

Sealing and Plating

Tamper-evident seals are fitted to all accessible connection points and adjustment controls. The speed limiter plate is permanently affixed to the vehicle, displaying all required information in accordance with ECE R89 and French national requirements.

Documentation

The installer issues a complete documentation package comprising:

  • Installation certificate with vehicle details, device serial number, and installer identification
  • Calibration certificate confirming the set speed and test method
  • Copy of the ECE R89 type approval certificate for the System 80

This documentation package satisfies the requirements of both the contrôle technique and DREAL operator audits. Full details of French speed limiter laws are available in our regulatory overview.

Mobile Installation Services

For large fleets or operators who cannot easily release vehicles to travel to an installation centre, AutoKontrol’s French network partners offer mobile installation services. A certified technician comes to your depot with all necessary equipment, enabling multiple vehicles to be fitted in a single day with minimal disruption to operations.

This is particularly valuable for:

  • Logistics operators with large fleets based at distribution centres
  • Coach operators who cannot take vehicles out of service during peak periods
  • Construction companies with vehicles spread across multiple sites

TrackSpeed: Installation with Integrated GPS Tracking

For operators who want speed limitation combined with fleet tracking, AutoKontrol’s TrackSpeed system integrates the System 80 speed limiter with ScorpionTrack Fleet GPS tracking. Installation of the combined system is carried out through the same network, with the added benefit of real-time fleet monitoring from day one.

TrackSpeed gives fleet managers visibility of vehicle location, speed compliance, driver behaviour, and route efficiency — all alongside the regulatory compliance that the speed limiter provides.
