Whether you are fitting speed limiters to comply with legal requirements for HGVs and PSVs, or voluntarily fitting them to a van or delivery fleet, understanding the installation process helps you plan effectively and minimise vehicle downtime.

Before Installation: Preparation
Vehicle Information
When you request a quote, we will ask for the following information about your vehicles:
- Make, model, and year of each vehicle
- Engine type (diesel, petrol, electric, or hybrid)
- Throttle type (Drive-By-Wire electronic throttle or cable/mechanical throttle)
- Electrical system voltage (12V or 24V)
- Any existing speed management systems already fitted
This information allows our technical team to specify the correct speed limiter model and wiring configuration for each vehicle. The AutoKontrol System 80 covers the vast majority of commercial vehicles on UK roads, but variant-specific wiring details ensure a clean, reliable installation.
Vehicle Preparation
On the day of installation, the vehicle should be:
- Available for the entire installation window (typically 1.5 to 3 hours depending on vehicle type)
- Parked on level ground with good access to the engine bay and cab interior
- Engine off, keys available for the installer
- Battery adequately charged (the installer will need to turn the ignition on and off multiple times)
There is no need to clean the vehicle, remove cargo from the load area, or carry out any mechanical preparation. Our installers work in the engine bay and under the dashboard — the load area is not affected.
The Installation Process: Step by Step
Step 1: Vehicle Assessment (15-20 minutes)
The engineer begins with a thorough assessment of the vehicle. This includes identifying the throttle type and throttle position sensor location, locating the vehicle speed sensor or CAN bus data connection, inspecting the existing wiring for any modifications or aftermarket systems, determining the optimal mounting location for the speed limiter module, and checking for any vehicle-specific considerations.
For Drive-By-Wire (DBW) vehicles — which make up the vast majority of modern commercial vehicles — the System 80 interfaces with the electronic throttle control system. For older cable-throttle vehicles, a different installation approach is used, involving an actuator on the throttle cable.
Step 2: Module Installation (30-45 minutes)
The speed limiter module is mounted in a secure, protected location — typically in the cab, behind the dashboard, or in the engine bay. The mounting location is chosen for security (to prevent unauthorised access), protection from water, heat, and vibration, and accessibility for future servicing.
The module is firmly secured using brackets and fixings appropriate to the mounting surface. It is positioned to allow adequate airflow for cooling and clear routing of wiring looms.
Step 3: Wiring and Connection (30-45 minutes)
The installer connects the speed limiter module to the vehicle’s electrical and control systems. The key connections are:
- Power supply: Permanent 12V or 24V power with appropriate fusing
- Ignition feed: So the system knows when the vehicle is running
- Speed signal: From the vehicle speed sensor, gearbox output sensor, or CAN bus
- Throttle interface: For DBW vehicles, the system connects in-line with the electronic throttle signal. For cable vehicles, a mechanical actuator is connected to the throttle cable
- Warning indicator: A dashboard-mounted LED or connection to an existing warning light
All wiring follows automotive best practice: soldered or crimped connections with heat-shrink insulation, properly routed and secured with cable ties and grommets, and protected from chafing and heat sources.
Step 4: Calibration (15-20 minutes)
Calibration is the process of setting and verifying the maximum speed. The speed limiter must be calibrated to within +/- 1 km/h of the set speed.
Calibration is performed using one of two methods:
Rolling road: The vehicle is driven on a chassis dynamometer while the installer adjusts the speed limiter setting. This is the most precise method but requires access to a rolling road facility.
GPS verification: The vehicle is driven on a suitable road (typically a dual carriageway or motorway) while the installer compares the speed limiter activation point against a calibrated GPS speedometer. This is the most common method for on-site installations.
The set speed is programmed into the module and secured with a tamper-evident seal.
Step 5: Tamper-Evident Sealing (5 minutes)
UK regulations require that speed limiters are fitted with tamper-evident seals to prevent unauthorised adjustment. AutoKontrol uses serialised, uniquely numbered security seals that are recorded in the installation documentation.
If a seal is broken — whether through tampering or legitimate maintenance — the speed limiter must be recalibrated and resealed by an approved installer before the vehicle returns to service.
Step 6: Speed Limiter Plate (5 minutes)
A speed limiter plate is affixed to the vehicle in a conspicuous position — typically inside the cab, visible to the driver and any inspector. The plate shows:
- The set speed (e.g., 56mph / 90 km/h)
- The speed limiter manufacturer (AutoKontrol)
- The installer’s name and approval number
- The date of installation/calibration
- The seal number
This plate is a legal requirement for HGVs and PSVs and must be present and legible at all times.
Step 7: Documentation (10 minutes)
Every AutoKontrol installation comes with a complete documentation package:
- Installation certificate recording the vehicle details, speed limiter model and serial number, set speed, installer details, and date
- Calibration record confirming the speed limiter has been tested and the set speed verified
- Seal record with the unique seal numbers
- Operator copy of all documents for your compliance files
These documents must be retained for DVSA inspection and annual test purposes. AutoKontrol also maintains central records of all installations, so replacement documentation can be provided if originals are lost.
Step 8: Function Testing (10-15 minutes)
The final step is a comprehensive function test. The installer verifies that the speed limiter activates at the correct speed, the vehicle drives normally below the set speed with no hesitation or throttle interference, the warning indicator functions correctly, the system deactivates cleanly when the vehicle slows below the set speed, and normal vehicle functions (cruise control, engine management, diagnostics) are unaffected.
The installer will also brief the driver on how the speed limiter behaves — what to expect when approaching the set speed, how the system feels during activation, and what the warning indicator means.

After Installation
Once the speed limiter is fitted, ongoing maintenance is straightforward. If any work is done to the gearbox, axle, or speed sensor, have the speed limiter recalibrated.
