Speed Limiter Warranty and Service Level Agreements
When a speed limiter fails, the consequences are not just inconvenient — they can be operationally critical and legally significant. A vehicle operating with a malfunctioning speed limiter may not legally be able to remain in service. A fleet manager who cannot get a supplier engineer on site quickly faces either grounding vehicles or accepting compliance risk.
This is why warranty terms and service level agreements are not small print to be skimmed before signing. They define exactly what protection you have — and what exposure remains — when something goes wrong.

Understanding Speed Limiter Warranty Coverage
A warranty for a speed limiter system typically has three distinct components. It is important to understand all three — and to verify that each is covered in the supplier’s written warranty terms.
1. Hardware Warranty
The hardware warranty covers the physical speed limiting device itself: the control unit, wiring harness, sensors, and any associated components. A hardware warranty should cover:
- Manufacturing defects in components and materials
- Failure of the device under normal operating conditions
- Replacement or repair of failed components at the supplier’s cost
What to look for: Hardware warranties for quality speed limiting equipment should be a minimum of 12 months. Leading suppliers offer 24 months as standard. Be cautious of short warranty periods — they may indicate lower confidence in product reliability.
What is typically excluded: Physical damage caused by accident, misuse, or deliberate tampering; failure caused by vehicle electrical faults external to the speed limiter system; wear of consumable components.
2. Software and Firmware Warranty
Where the speed limiter incorporates software or firmware (which is standard in modern CAN bus and Drive-By-Wire systems, and in integrated telematics products like TrackSpeed), the software warranty defines the supplier’s obligations in the event of a software fault.
What to look for: The software warranty should cover defects in the software that cause the device to operate incorrectly, and should include the provision of firmware updates to address identified defects at no additional cost.
What is typically excluded: Issues arising from integration with third-party software not specified as compatible; problems caused by software modifications made without supplier authorisation.
3. Installation Workmanship Warranty
This is a separate element that covers the quality of the physical installation. A workmanship warranty means that if the installer has made a wiring error, used incorrect fixings, or failed to follow the approved installation method, the cost of investigation and remediation falls to the supplier rather than the client.
What to look for: Minimum 12 months from installation date. Installers should be certified and directly employed or supervised — this is what makes the workmanship warranty meaningful. A supplier who uses uncertified subcontractors cannot reliably stand behind installation workmanship.

What SLA Metrics Actually Mean
SLA (Service Level Agreement) commitments are frequently cited in supplier marketing materials but rarely defined with sufficient precision. Here is what each metric should mean, and what questions to ask:
Response Time
Response time is the time from when you log a fault to when the supplier acknowledges it and commits to a course of action.
Ask: Does “response” mean a human being calls you back, or does it mean an automated email acknowledgement? What are the hours of coverage — business hours only, or 24/7? What happens if a fault is logged outside business hours?
Attendance Time
Attendance time (sometimes called “time to site”) is the time from fault logging to an engineer arriving at your vehicle or depot.
Ask: Is this measured in calendar hours or business hours? What is the geographic coverage — will an engineer attend any location your vehicles operate, or only at certain service centres? What is the commitment if your depot is in a remote location?
Resolution Time
Resolution time is the time from fault logging to the fault being fully resolved.
Ask: Is resolution defined as the device being returned to full operation, or only as the fault being diagnosed? What happens if a part is not immediately available — does the clock stop, or does the SLA commitment continue? Is there a maximum resolution time even in complex fault scenarios?
System Uptime (for Telematics)
If your speed limiter includes an integrated telematics component (as with TrackSpeed), the SLA should include a system availability commitment for the fleet management portal and data transmission service.
Ask: What is the target uptime percentage? How is downtime measured and reported? What is excluded (planned maintenance windows, etc.)? What remedies are available if uptime targets are not met?
Evaluating Supplier SLA Commitments
Use the following checklist when reviewing any supplier’s warranty or SLA documentation:
- Is the warranty period clearly stated for hardware, software, and workmanship separately?
- Are exclusions explicitly listed — and are they reasonable?
- Is the SLA response time defined by specific metric, not vague language?
- Is SLA coverage defined by hours and geography?
- Is there a defined escalation process if SLA targets are missed?
- What remedies does the client have for persistent SLA breaches?
- Is the supplier’s warranty backed by their own resources, or dependent on a third-party manufacturer?
- Is there a clear process for end-of-warranty transition — either to a maintenance contract or extended warranty?
Remote Diagnostics and First-Line Support
The quality of first-line technical support significantly affects the real-world impact of SLA commitments. A supplier with strong remote diagnostic capability can often resolve issues without an engineer visit — or at least diagnose the fault accurately so that the attending engineer arrives with the right parts.

A warranty is a manufacturer or supplier guarantee against defects and failures during the warranty period. A maintenance contract is an ongoing service arrangement that covers scheduled inspections, calibration, and support beyond the warranty period.
For fleet operators, the transition from warranty to maintenance contract is a critical point. A common mistake is to assume that warranty coverage is sufficient and to fail to put a maintenance contract in place. When the warranty expires, there is no contractual basis for support — and any work required is charged at day rates.
Best practice: Start your maintenance contract conversation before your warranty expires. Ideally, your maintenance contract should be negotiated at point of purchase, with an effective date that aligns with the end of the hardware warranty period.
