Limitador de Velocidad Colombia: Speed Limiters for Tractomulas, Volquetas and Buses

Colombian freight runs on mountain roads. Tractomulas climb out of Buenaventura and Cartagena, volquetas shuttle material between quarries and building sites, and buses connect cities that sit at very different altitudes. The device that caps a vehicle’s road speed is called a limitador de velocidad. In English it is a speed limiter or speed governor.

AutoKontrol makes them in the UK. We are part of Scorpion Group, which has built vehicle electronics since 1973, and our units are ECE R89 type-approved. We ship direct to Colombian fleets with fitting instructions, and the fleet fits the unit itself or uses a local workshop. This page covers the speed caps your vehicles run under, which limitador suits which vehicle, and where it pays back.

Speed limits for public service, cargo and school vehicles in Colombia

Ley 1239 de 2008, which amends articles 106 and 107 of Ley 769 de 2002 (the Código Nacional de Tránsito), sets the speed for public service, cargo and school transport vehicles:

RoadLimit for public service, cargo and school vehicles
Urban roads60 km/h
National and departmental highwaysmay not exceed 80 km/h

That covers a tractomula, a camión de carga, a volqueta in cargo service, a school bus and a public service bus alike. A limitador set at or below 80 km/h means the vehicle cannot drift above the highway cap on a long descent or an empty straight, whatever the driver does with the pedal. For tighter urban sections and sites, GeoKontrol applies lower speeds in defined GPS zones.

Diesel per kilometre

“Cuánto diésel gasta una tractomula por km” is a question every operator asks. The UPME and IDB baseline study of cargo fuel consumption in Colombia measured new (model year 2022 and later) diesel 3SX tractor-trailers at 31.85 diesel-equivalent litres per 100 km, about 3.1 km per litre, on the FECOC driving cycle, from more than 1,000 vehicles monitored from 2019 to 2024. That is a test-cycle figure for new vehicles, not a promise for your fleet. Loaded weight, gradient and speed move the real number a lot.

What a limiter does is remove the highest-consumption running from every trip. We quote no saving percentage because it depends on your loads, routes and current driving. Put your own figures into the HGV fuel consumption calculator or the fleet fuel savings calculator.

Why Colombian fleets fit a limitador de velocidad

Descents. Routes such as the Andean passes are long, steep and often wet. A loaded tractomula needs distance to stop, and capping speed gives the driver margin.

Insurance. A sealed limiter with tamper detection is something you can show an insurer. A written policy alone is not.

Client and site rules. Ports, quarries, mines and large shippers set speed rules for the contractors who serve them. A sealed limiter, plus the speed record from TrackSpeed, lets you show you meet them.

Driver behaviour. The limit holds whatever the pedal does, so your speed policy no longer depends on who is driving that day.

The dividing line is how the engine controls fuel. An electronic pedal means DBW. Mechanical fuel control means System 80, because an electronic limiter has nothing to connect to. Our article on electronic versus mechanical speed limiters goes through the choice.

Sectors where it makes most sense

  • Long-haul freight (tractomulas). The biggest fuel bills and the longest exposure on mountain corridors.
  • Construction and aggregates (volquetas). Heavy tippers on mixed road and site routes, where a geofenced lower speed pays off.
  • Passenger buses. Passenger safety on long intercity runs and a visible control for operators.
  • School transport. Passengers on board and a fixed cap for the whole route.
  • Distribution fleets. Many drivers, many routes, and a need for consistent behaviour.

How supply and fitting work

We ship direct to your fleet with fitting instructions. Your own workshop can fit the unit, or you can use a local auto-electrician or any workshop you trust. Our technical team supports you remotely through fitting, setup and calibration. A DBW takes about 1.5 hours and System 80 or TrackSpeed about 60 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What speed should a limitador de velocidad be set to in Colombia?

At or below the limit for the vehicle and road. For public service, cargo and school vehicles that is 60 km/h on urban roads and no more than 80 km/h on national and departmental highways, under Ley 1239 de 2008. Many fleets set a little lower for fuel and margin.

Can it be fitted to a tractomula?

If the tractomula has an electronic throttle, the DBW works on that signal. Send us the make, model, year and engine and we will confirm the right unit.

Does it work on an older volqueta?

Yes, where the engine has mechanical fuel control. System 80 is mechanical and works on the fuel line, with accuracy of +/-1-2 km/h.

Can our own workshop fit it?

Yes. We ship with fitting instructions, and your workshop or a local auto-electrician can fit it. We support remotely.

Does it reduce diesel consumption per km?

Speed strongly affects diesel use, and a limiter removes the highest-consumption running. The real saving depends on your load, route and current driving, so test your own figures in the calculators above.
